Good Deal on DVD Player

This is a good DVD player, but, for about $210, you can get the Sony DVP-S360 DVD player at Computers4Sure. The Sony is going to be a little better than the Panasonic, but if the Panasonic dropped to about $190 or so, I'd say go with it. Given that the lowest price is $201, I'd say go with a Sony.

In terms of playing MP3's, no decent DVD player that I have seen plays DVD's, so if you want a good DVD player (which I would suggest), don't worry about whether or not it plays MP3s.

Value-wise, all the power to Panasonic. i had one of the 5 DVD changers (C220) and i loved it. If uttmost visual quality is what you're looking for, Sony is defenitely a top contender.

With your price range, you have the Pioneer DV-333, Toshiba SD-1200, and SONY DVP-S360 to consider. I say you go with the Pioneer. It's simple looking, but it WILL play CD-R unlike the SONY, and the picture/sound quality is excellent. I have heard the SONY to be "soft" in the picture, ie the picture is not as sharp. Some like that, others don't. Toshiba players are a deal also, but they have had trouble reading some discs. They're all in the $200 range that you're looking at.

acutually I have a Sony CX850D, and it plays CD-r's, just not the cheap ones, TDK's, Sony's(why am I not surprised?) and Kodak's all seem to make nice VCD's

not that most consumers care but Sony isn't a very friendly corporate citizen these days, in some opinions. For example, they have huge music and movie interests, and thus side w/ the MPAA in its battles against mp3 and w/ the DVDCA in its efforts to smack down non-CSS licensees. Now I'm not saying Panasonic or Toshiba is any better, but personally I'm not contributing any more of my dollars to Sony.

I agree with Manly -- anything but Sony. Apart from their anti-consumer stance on media related playback and copying issues, my personal experience with Sony laser optical disc products has been dismal. To date, not one such product I have owned or that has been owned by my immediate family members is still working. If it has a laser and Sony makes it, it's a piece of junk and will die sooner than competing products.

YMMV, but I once found a text file on the web with clippings from old USENET postings related to Sony CD and laser disc players. The file was essentially a gigantic list of problem reports, probably with 300 or more individuals posting of breakdowns, failures, etc. These are not flukes but symptomatic of Sony's poor laser optical disc product design and/or quality.

Yeah, I understand and agree about Sony and consumer frinedliness. They own so much music "rights" that their corporate lawyers and greed mongers run the show. Of course, they have good spin doctors to hide this from the average consumer. Sony has a big name, but aside from their top of the line stuff, they are overpriced and over hyped unless you can get in on a good deal/sale!

I would recommend the new Samsung players that are coming out now. They are the first big brand players to support MP3 playback, and they are pretty inexpensive too. They have the features of expensive players like dual laser pickups and component/optical outputs. Models to look for are the Samsung DVD-711 and DVD-812. Both are pretty much the same except the 812 has a built in AC-3 decoder. The 812 runs around $250 and you can order it at CDW.
take a look at them at http://www.samsungusa.com/
then do a search to see if anyone has them in stock yet.

As for Sony, I have had very bad experiences with their products. I bought a top of the line Receiver (non-ES) a couple years ago and it has broken or had defects THREE separate times in a short time span. Sony's good reputation is definately unfounded.
The more I look at Panasonic products, the more I like them. (And after all, they are the biggest electronics company in the world) Although they dont really make the best DVD players.

I have a kenwood (VR209)dolby digital receiver and a triple JVC DVD Player(XV-M555).
What really stinks (moan) is that neither one has the decoder in it.
I figure this out after buying them and the fibre cable , I think they should say Dolby Digital Ready on them (deceptive selling techniques)
Can anyone recommend a decoder or a cheap way to have all 5.1 channels working?

I have a JVC DVD player from Circuit City, and it works beautifully. It plays CD-R's, CD-RW's, regular CD's, and the DVD's are perfectly clear.
