Ew. CoolMax. There's always something wrong when a supposed 700W PSU runs cheaper than another PSU at 620W. Fail.

32 out of 37 reviews at the Egg rated this product excellent!!

The Coolmax Green series get a good rating by Jonny Guru. Buy.com has the Coolmax GTC Greenpower 1000w Power supply for $219.00 shipped - Best price I've found at ZZF abd Directron have been $219 after a $100 rebate.

The Greenpower 1000 is not modular, but it is among Jonny Guru's high end gaming recommendations.

The Coolmax Greenpower that JonnyGuru ranks as only Third Tier is based on the ATNG server platform. You should never assume that different PSU models branded by the same company are also manufactured by the same company.

Case in point here. If you look at these two photos of the Coolmax CUG-700B, you can just make out the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) record number--e144195. A search of that record number indicates that this PSU is made by Sirtec International Co., LTD.

And no, I've never heard of them either--I vote pass.

Now, now...we're supposed to play nice. Jonny Guru's third tier recommendations include some pretty good products: Seasonic S /M12; Enermax Infinity and PC Power and Cooling Silencer series. "Third tier" is not as bad as it may initially seem (to the uninitiated), with four tiers total which are J.G.'s recommended high end PSU products. But we can each take or leave that as we choose.

Not that I'm sticking up for CoolMAX - I passed on the 1000w unit as well. They "make" some really crappy low end power supplies. The size, non-modular/fixed cabling and mixed noise reports (although noise reports vary, even on J.G.'s site) obviously make it a no frills powered packed monster.

Interesting enough, I Googled Sirtec power supplies, digging up a couple of reviews, for example this 2005 review[/L] and 2006 CEBIT coverage citing Sirtec Corp as OEM suppliers for ThermalTake, Aopen, Enlight and several other low end names.

This is a good place to find good information, thought provoking exchanges and bargains: I enjoyed the Woofmeister
comments, getting my curiosity out of its dusty closet. .

I agree with you that I may have been overly harsh with respect to JonnyGuru's "third tier" PSUs. Placing third tier is no small accomplishment. Moreover, I'm suggesting that OCZ GameXstreme PSUs are good buys in other threads and those are even lower tier PSUs on the JonnyGuru scale.

Erm.

If you think those are low-end names, you don't know what low-end names are.

Sirtec isn't a top-notch manu of PSUs, but they are solidly middle-of-the-pack.

So for a NON SLI gaming system, is the Corsair 520W or this Sirtec rebadged Coolermaster your recommendation?

They are about the same price after shipping.
