I dunno what the frequency range is on these things so it might not be applicable anymore with 2.4 and 5.8GHz phones.

There was a guy on my dorm floor who had 900MHz phone channels dialed in on his handheld. I assume he set it on the table or something while he flogged the dolphin. He was also an EMT in training and liked to chase ambulances.

I live in Oklahoma near an army base so i use mine for:

Tornado warning alerts and also storm chasers/spotters. (quite entertaining)

Listen to cops and fire dept calls, I'm also in our neighborhood watch program. (problem houses)
Listen to army aviation.

It's good for finding out about DUI checkpoints, speed traps, and other stuff.

Also pickup walmart, fast food, wireless mic, some cell and cordless phone traffic, military police, dog catchers, water dept, etc. etc.

One time I overheard a guy talking to onstar and ordering new services. Gave his credit card info and everything, clear as day.

Phones and radios give you a HUGE false sense of security. You never know who is listening.

These things are built to tune into different radio frequencies.

Freshman year of college, I brought mine into the dorms and a group of us were listening to cordless phone conversations...

we ended up listening to a girl who lived 4 floors below us, um, 'talking' dirty to her bf. So while she was all lovey dovey on the phone, two of my buds crept up to her door, listened for a second, and then slammed their fists into the door as hard as they could and took off. While it was obviously a pretty immature thing to do, it was DAMN funny to hear that girls reaction over the scanner...

Pretty good deal. The newer scanners are partially digital. If your area uses the APCO digital system, you won't be able to pick up those signals.

not really, most have pc interfaces now you just program via PC.

the pro-96 can pick it up as well as the Uniden BC250d if you get the card.

almost bought this one but i read a review that it doean't pick up military aviation and i live 2 blocks from an army airfield so i want those freqs

The newer scanners (US) have blockers in them so you can?t get on those frequencies.
I think its like scanners made after 1996 or something.

It is illegal to listen in hence they now block them. If you can get older scanners then you should be able to get those frequencies.

Or you can mod the scanner by changing the crystals if you are brave...

Yeah, I watched the whole sad thing on C-Span as it unfolded.

Prior to that, AFAIK, it had always been legal to pick up "over the air" RF broadcasts, which is why early Satellite recievers were so popular - you could pick up the (then un-scrambled) downlink signals of the local sat/cable affiliates, movies/pr0n on-demand, so to speak. Eventually, the television networks learned to encrypt their sat signals. That was the proper solution.

The reason that listening to analog cellular phone (and I guess cordless phone too? Not sure, since those operate in the unlicensed freq ranges, maybe not) conversations/traffic with scanners is illegal now, is because the cellular phone industry in the US was too cheap to upgrade their networks to include the proper scrambling/encryption features to protect the privacy of their subscribers, so instead of paying to properly technically upgrade their network (like the sat tv. industry did), they lobbied really hard and sucessfully managed to take away the freedoms of US citizens, to tune in and recieve over-the-air RF signals that are passing through their individual airspace.

Nowadays, the vast majority of cell phones are digital, and the issue doesn't really matter anymore, but they never repealed the law, of course. Nor did the legal approach to the analog cellular situation do darn thing to actually protect user's privacy, they were still completely unprotected.

I guess it's better to appear to have patched the hole, reduced the risk, rather than actually take the necessary steps and incur the real cost to do so.

(Possibly why XP SP2 has a pretty little "Security Center" icon, instead of allowing an easy way for the user to unbind all of the listening ports of the various system services.. but I digress.)
