I read a post a friend of mine put on Facebook were they say:

"I did a good deed today by giving the trash man a tip so they could have lunch on me today...what good deed have you done?"

I think the best good deeds are the ones you do because it makes someone else feel better and not to make yourself feel or look better.

What do you think?

I think the best good deeds are the ones that are done and not just thought about. Brag or not, a good deed was done.

I totally agree with you! I'm getting tired of seeing "Tipping a waitress $200" and similar videos on youtube.

It makes me lose faith in humanity but I know there are plenty of people who help out others on a daily basis and don't need recognition for it. These are the real heros.

i dont believe in altruism, people always do things for selfish reasons. at the end of the day they did something nice so why are people bitching?

No need to brag about any good deed you've done. Those who do are just people who seek attention, "Hey look what I did today". :\

I bought my waitress a shot last weekend because she looked down and out. It perked her right up.

Maybe he's trying to promote a pay it forward?

Judging by your post count, you haven't got in on this new "be as loud as possible without thinking about content" craze.

They wanted to double-dip, feeling good for giving the money and feeling smug on the internet. Plain and simple.

I think you need to stop using facebook. Then you won't see annoying crap like that.

^^^This

It's bad form bragging about how awesome you are. The net good got an overall raise, but not as high as it would be if the person just STFU. I'd just accept it as notice that person isn't someone I really want to hang out with.

Yes, and no. I see it also as maybe it will spur someone else to do a good deed. 2 good deads is better than 1, right?

This is similar to the "humblebrag".

The same type of people tend to do both. "Hi...I'm Mr NeedValidation..."

It's a matter of phrasing. I encourage people to donate to projects they appreciate without saying what I did. Give a good argument why people should do something, and your own actions are irrelevant.

I've considered posting on Facebook about the different charities I donate to hoping to get others to feel compelled to look into charitable donations themselves, but it always feels like it'd be bragging that I donate to charities.

The funny thing - some garbage men make more money than the OP's friend probably does. Do a google for salaries, and you'll see there's a lot of variation. In some states, they barely make more than minimum wage. But, in some areas of the country, salaries of $75k or more are common. (And, often, with great pension benefits.)

If it came down to either more good deeds coupled with posts on facebook versus less good deeds, I'd go with the more good deeds coupled with facebook posts every single time.

I never bother anyone. I never ask anyone for anything without appropriate compensation. I don't try to stop anyone from doing anything that doesn't directly affect me. I don't whine. I don't lie. I don't cheat. I don't steal. I put far more into society than I take out of it.

I don't do any good deeds though. Then again, I think most good deeds are really just token gestures people make in order to live with the shitty behavior they engage in the rest of their lives while still believing they are decent people. Maybe I'm too cynical.
