Not sure what section to start this thread in.

I work from home, and I really need a new desk chair, I'm using an old leather one that's 12 or 13 years old.

It seems like there are leather chairs around 100-150, or high end chairs that are over $500.

My issue is I'm pretty picky, so I would ideally like to be able to go somewhere and try it out instead of ordering from the internet, not being happy, and having to send it back.

any ideas?

It's one of the single most important updates to a system: the chair.

Personally I've been looking for a spring cushion loaded chair. Every chair I've decided on always ends up hurting my ass and making my legs cramp/soar. I'm not talking about the ones that can lean you back with that bouncy spring feeling, i mean the seat part needs to be spring loaded. Kinda like a living room chair.

Where are these chairs!!

crate and barrel also has some office chairs. I find Office Max/Staples office chairs to suck tremendously and always wears out after 2 years max.

When my wife and I bought our new house we went to Ikea to look around. I'm not usually a big Ikea person, but we found an office chair that we both loved, so we bought two @ $60 a piece and we've been very happy with them.

Sorry I don't remember the name, but that's another place where you can go and try out multiple models.

This is tough. You can spend $50 at Ikea or Walmart or up over $1000+ from a high end executive office shop. You'd really have to sit in them. There's someplace locally that sells office furniture and some of it is really nice. They'll let you browse all day if you wanted. Maybe you have something similar in your area?

Many people spend $1000 on their PC, $400 on a monitor and use one of those chairs you had in grade school. I ask myself... why? lol If you enjoy your time on the PC enough (web browsing, music, gaming etc) to spend significant time in front of it then there's no reason you should sacrifice comfort.

I think that having a great office chair is just as important as the computer your using. If your going to spend the majority of your day sitting at a desk at home or at work, you need to be comfortable or your not going to work well. When I started up my company, I was sitting at my dinning room table on a wooden chair. As soon as I had the space, I bought an office chair that was comfortable to sit in, for the whole day. I would suggest Macy's as they give good quality chairs, and that is where I bought my chair from. You should give them a try.
Good luck

A good chair is an investment. There are several suggestions about B/M stores. There are others. Your bod is unique to you, and the only way to get it right is to sit in it. Like shoes, you try it on. It is not a good item for Internet purchase unless you live ina very isolated place. I bought mine locally from Copenhagen about 12 years ago. I have since had the arms reupholstered. It fits like an old pair of slippers. As I recall, it was about %900 (Ekornes Stressless from Norway) and worth every penny.

Go chair shopping. It can be fun.

thanks for the ideas. I didn't think crate and barrel would have office chairs. I'll try checking out some places this weekend, looking forward to a new chair.

A few random thoughts...

Inexpensive chairs suffer padding compression more than expensive ones (in general), if it's cheap then aim for something a little fluffier than you'd otherwise want with the expectation it'll settle in within a few weeks.

Chairs around 100-150 generally aren't real leather, they're polyurethane bonded leather which just takes leather fiber scraps and adds them to the polyurethane which is hotter to sit in, doesn't breathe as well, cracks in colder temperatures or from exposure to UV (sunlight). That may be acceptable if you only need to get 18 months of continuous use out of a chair...

If your weight is approaching 175 lbs or more, you'll find the cheap chair frames weak. Flopping back too hard or pushing up on an arm when standing can actually break something, but we could say the same about any lightweight chair so it's a matter of recognizing the chair's limits.

Think about how you sit in the chair. Is it only in one position or will you sometimes kick back or sit indian style or ?? The most comfortable chair for sitting upright with perfect posture may feel confining in any other seating position.

I wholeheartedly agree that you must sit in a few chairs to pick the best one but keep in mind that you can always add a seat pad to an otherwise perfect chair.
