Good dress shoes?

What ever happened to old leather shoes, that you could wear for 5 years, then get re-soled and wear for another 5 years.

All these crappy dress shoes now a days have a thin leather or shiny veneer that scratches off and successfully pisses me off.

I am ready to pony up the cash for some good, quality shoes.

The only qualifications are that they are black and semi-shiny.

Suggestions?

I wear Smith's American steel toe workboots. $30 for a 6" black all leather steel toe workboot is a steal. Should have gotten two pairs when they had them. Now they're well worn (after a year and a half of everyday wear), but they're nowhere to be found.

Saved my toes quite a few times in the machine shop, too.

I bought a crappy $30 pair of shoes from Kohls that looked good for about 3 months but then started to look like crap. I tried polishing them but they still look like ass. So, I went out and dropped $100 for a pair of nice leather loafers from Macy's. I don't know if I will be able to re-sole them in 5 years but they are holding up quite well so far. Good shoes are worth the money. :thumbsup:

I have 3prs and they are fantastic! They are crafted in the US using only the finest leather. All Leather soles non-dyed so you can see the quality.

They can be refinished for $85 and include heels, soles, and refinishing.

They have stores and are also sold in Nordstroms.

If you want some really high quality shoes, either Salvatore Ferregamo or Bruno Magli. If you go to a place like MJM (Discount Designer Shoes), you could pick p a pair for around 300-350.

Ferregamo's and Magli's are nice stuff. Also check out Mezlan. They make some nice quality shoes.

Doc's, but only certain ones. They are good for at least 2 years, and the most confortable pair of dress shoes I have ever worn.

I bought a $180 pair of ECCO's two years ago, and the sill look brand new. Plus, they are the most comfortable shows I own. If you pay for a quality shoe, it should easily last 4+ years.

Just go to JCPenney or Kaufmanns. They both have decent, nice looking shoes at a reasonable price. Myself, I prefer the classic wing-tip. Never goes out of style.

Those are the kind I always get, and they last ~6 months.

Really? The pair I have now are going on 3 years and still look great. It's time to start thinking about new soles, though.

Florsheim isn't too bad either... usually go for around $100-$200. Got a pair as my "dancing shoes" and they've been serving well for 3 years now =)

For reasonably priced and good quality, I echo the Allen Edmonds recommendation.

I'm really hard on dress shoes: lots of travel, tend to wear the same ones every day, rains a lot where I'm living, etc, and they've been holding out well.

I've resoled them once already (just over 2 years old), but the uppers are going strong. I'm guessing I'll get 4-5 years out of them.
