Good experience with Corsair RMA

Update: Corsair turned my RAM around in one business day. I have no issues or complaints.

I bought a Corsair XMS2 2x2GB DDR2 kit from Fry's, good deal after mail-in rebate. I received it Friday and installed it yesterday. One stick is good (stable in Windows; 0 errors in 3 passes of Memtest86+ v4.20), and the other is bad (fails to boot half the time; Explorer crashes constantly; 1 clean pass, then 5000+ errors in the next pass).

I'm going to RMA the kit, but the question is to where. Opinions on Corsair's RMA process seem pretty favorable, e.g., [thread=2216354]this thread[/thread]. I'm leaning toward Fry's due to the rebate requiring the original UPC and documentation, which I might need for the RMA also. I'm using my old RAM, and I can absorb the cost of two kits (there's a new rebate) until Fry's processes the refund.

Edit: I found the Corsair Rebate Center FAQ. According to the relevant answer, it should be possible to RMA after submitting the rebate. (Of course it should be possible, but I'm worried that it might be more difficult.)

RMA with the manufacturer has nothing to do with whether or not it has a rebate, or whether or not the UPC is still on the packaging. If the product is under warranty and you have proof of purchase (receipt) then you are good to go.

RMA with the vendor (in this case, Fry's) cannot be done if rebate has been sent off (UPC removed).

Thanks for confirming. I need to check the rebate terms to see if they require the original packing slip or if a printout of the online receipt on the Fry's site will work. I want to be extra sure that I don't mail off the original (I'm going to photocopy everything) of something that I need.

Rebate needs invoice, not packing slip. If online purchase, log in to your account and print the invoice.

You haven't removed the UPC code yet

bring it to Fry's

If 'no' to any of the above, contact Corsair.

i had to RMA some XMS2 to corsair and they took them, tested and 2 days later i had my new kit. the procedure says 1) vendor 2) manufacturer, don't worry if Fry tells you no as corsair are cool cats.

Thanks for the replies. Corsair accepted my online RMA immediately, and the kit is on its way there.

I just sent a set of Corsair Vengeance off to Corsair yesterday as well. I did notice you could avoid a bit of hassle if you just click that they fail under Memtest. I took mine out and filled in the serial and lot numbers on the RMA form and it was approved immediately. Printed out the mail label, packed the chips in some stray bubblewrap, popped into a USPS expressmail flat rate box with delivery confirmation, paid my $6 and off it went.

Let's hope it gets back to me soon (I bought another exact set with a Newegg "thanks" coupon for $35 to hold me over, looking forward to 16 gigs!) I did notice in a scant 4 months the Ver. went from 1.x to 5.x...

Just FYI, the version numbers are not related to time. We often use multiple ICs due more to supply and demand.

If you can, you should definitely return to frys because they will just exchange it for a brand new kit fairly quickly. It would be faster than RMAing to manufacturer.

you guys see what lengths these guys go to make sure they are n1?

there is no chance in hell i will even buy a different brand of ram.

Yes, I do have the wonderful job of working for Corsair and thanks for your kind words. Been with the company about 5.5 years now.

Just a follow up ...
I express mailed my ram the day I got my rma, Corsair's site showed it received two days later. Took a day to confirm everything, another to go to shipping, two for ups to pick it up and three more to get to my door. Popped it in (doubling my ram to 16gb - no noticeable difference) and ran memtest for six hours. All good

Corsair turned my RAM around in one business day. I ran Memtest overnight on all 6 GB to see if my motherboard would support it, then I pulled my old RAM since I'm running 32-bit XP. I ran a few more passes on the 4 GB, no errors.
