Good for Nvidia... Prices rising but they deserve it. Geforce3 worthy of $600 price tag

3 years ago Nvidia was far from the leader in the graphics card industry. Now however, I don't think anyone will dispute the fact that they are the leader in 3d technology. They kept to their 6 month product line and blew away the once thought unstoppable competition 3dfx.

They listened to their market.
-We asked for 32bit color, and they gave it to us before anyone else.

-We asked for the fastest possible gaming and they gave us a vastly superior card every 6 months.

-We wanted FSAA, and even though 3dfx seemed primed to release it first Nvidia gave us new drivers supporting the function (although not the better FSAA, they still gave it to us right away).

-We asked for inovation and Nvidia developed hardware T&L.

Nvidia is a fanastic company that knows what their doing. In an industry so dependent on user satisfaction Nvidia has proven that it knows what the consumer wants. The Geforce3 looks amazing and hopefully will live up to its marketing hype. $600 is a lot of money and even though many of us won't be spending that kind of money on a new card there are more than enough people out there willing to buy it. I say good for Nvidia, you have been working hard a long time now and its time for you to relish in the profits. Prices will come down and besides it takes nearly a year for the game companies to put out a product that truely takes advantage of last years card anyway. In a year the geforce3 will be available for $200 and it will be us hardware junkies who understand the industry that will wait to buy it then. Let the idiots buying compaq's and dell's for $2,500 coupled with "the new Geforce3" give Nvidia the revenue it deserves and needs. We can just sit here and wait while the idiots provide Nvidia with the revenue needed to produce an even faster card and then take advantage of the price drop a year later.

Stop bitching about the price. If you really want the card that bad when it comes out then obviously it is worth the $600 to you. Simple supply and demand here and Nvidia being the smart company they are is just taking advantage of it.

-thoughts??

I am not bitching. I just can't afford a $600 video card. Plain and simple - any video card above $300 is too expensive.

damn, i think anything above 150 is expensive... 600 bucks ? i'll just wait 2 cycle (12 month) for geforce 3 pro ultra QDR or something like that and get the 600 card for 150...

Hey, good for you, go ahead and buy one for $600. And for the next 6 months you can use it to watch technology demos of games that may never come out.....

True traVinator, I wonder what kind of improvement current gmes will see running on GF3. Like T&L - I had no single game during the lifetime of my first GeForce that used T&L. Even now after a year or so, there are very few that take real advantage of T&L.

I never said I was gonna buy one. If you understand the point then you will realize that really no-one needs a geforce3 right now. Sure it may come bundled with a technology demo to impress your friends but no tech demo is worth $600. For now all anyone needs is a geforce2 or ultra to play games with no slowdown. The Geforce3 coming out will only further drop the price of the ultra and anyone with an ultra will get be fine for 8-9 months. I'm just pointing out that Nvidia is playing the market well and profiting from people unaware of the video card power necessary.

Anyone who trys to justify a price of $600 for a video card that is primarily used to play games is "out to lunch upstairs, they have a few screws missing, the lights are on but no one is home, they are in a deep coma even though they're wide awake, they're missing..........you get my drift ."

I'm impressed with the gefart3 also, BUT i still don't feel the damn thing is worth 600 bucks at launch. Whatever happened to the $300 price tag for the midrange product using the latest tech? I'd say that idea left with the whole 3dfx asset buy out. No competition = higher prices

I still wonder how Rampage woud have compared if it were released.

I think everyone's suddenly forgotten about the GF2 Ultra. It's still a very powerful board and it'll likely drop in price when the GF3 is released. It shouldn't have any trouble running Doom 3 or Unreal 2.

Everyone is forgetting this is the introductory price. The Ultra hit at $550 1-2 months ago, now its $350. History will teach us that intro prices mean nothing. For instance that long forgotten p4 was introduced at ~$1,300. now they are obselete.

BFG, I hope the Ultra drops. the NV20 is probably, IMHO, NOT going to be that big of a deal for quite some time.

In other words, it won't be worth anywhere NEAR $600 if the Ultra can be had consisitently for ~$325

I don't think it'll be more than 25% faster than the Ultra in the highest resolutions.

Of course, that's 75 fps @ 1600x1200x32 in Q3, as opposed to 60 fps, so that is still quite significant.

But not worth ~$250, IMHO.

BTW, you figure out that goofy start menu bug thingee yet? how rude of that card to mess up your start menu.

considering the mac version is coming out first and at $600 does anybody actually believe the pc version will be $600 also? Or just a retail price, thus if we shop around we'll be able to find it cheaper?

because I have never seen a mac video card NOT cost more than the pc version. Their market is so much smaller and changes to the boards are needed I assume, plus driver development, etc.

Im actually looking to get one of these cards asap and not touch my rig for a year. But I just prey to god it will accelerate my older games and take advantage of my 1300mhz cpu, cause I know optomized games won't be coming any time soon.

They were obsolete to begin with... and I'm not kidding either.

Hehe, I'm waiting for the GeForce3 MX. I'm almost certain that it'll come out in a few weeks after GF3 release. nVIDIA knows that 600 bucks for a vidcard is just unacceptable for most of us gamers. And they also know that game developers will support the technology that is packed into the GPU when it is widely supported. (OK, Carmack supports it right now but he seems to be the only one(?))

Therefore, GeForce3 MX all the way...

Like they say in the Nvidia marketing department when looking at the buying pareto for their products, "At $600 dollars there is "one" born every s............................................ix months"

R. Ferrars the 1st's submission for "Why do I want to work for Nvidia" tugged at my heart. It must have made it to the final round of judging

...sunshine, lolipops and everything is wonderful.
