For some reason I've been really bored with all this schooling as of lately and I've honestly been thinking of storing all my stuff and moving to a different country and working for a year as a huge break. Can any of you speak from experience of this give recommendations on countries that don't have a huge cost of living and are really pleasant? Spain actually seems like a nice place and I took 3-4 years of Spanish(but am REALLY rusty) but I'm not sure how expensive it is. Anyone have any ideas? I've just lived in the same place and had the same job the majority of my life and want something different for a change.

I lived in Spain this past summer and liked it. You dont need a car at all, but be prepared to live without air conditioning. The women are hot, the only overweight people you see are people that are like 60 and older.

Puerto Rico is alright. It's really hot but people have AC and there are some nice beaches. Mostly everyone in San Juan speaks perfect English, so that shouldn't be a problem (not like Spanish is that hard to learn anyhow). Just keep in mind that you should stick to the main cities and be careful at night, there is a little more crime than you may be used to. Other than that, the people were very nice, polite and helpful. Also, generally, the cost living is not as much in the U.S. Just about everything is cheaper, with the exception of gas.

and its weird because people dont go out to clubs until like 2-3 am and party til like 7 or 8am. It doesnt get dark until like 11pm and people eat dinner at 10pm. Most of the city shutdowns between 2-5:30pm.

Go somewhere where English is spoken. It will make things much easier. If your Spanish is rusty, I wouldn't head to Spain.

True, it is generally better if you can speak the language fluently, but I can garuntee you that as long as you stick to the big cities and towns, just about everyone will speak English. Of course, it doesn't hurt to know some Spanish either. If you're looking for a country that speaks English, try the Netherlands. There's Amsterdam  and it is an english-speaking country.

Not in spain, even in Madrid I could not find a cab driver that would communicate in English.

I would travel to such a place on vacation before storing everything and making a big move.

How about working on Ibiza one summer? Or on a Greek island? Islands like those typically need a lot of English-speaking help for the tourist season. GREAT TIMES!

Hmm, interesting. Well I speak Spanish, so it wouldn't be a problem for me . However, if you do know Spanish, remember that there are some differences between the Spanish spoken in Latin American countries and the Spanish spoken in Spain. The one that comes to mind here is the usage of "nosotros" and "vosotros".

Western Europe isn't exactly a "low cost of living"...if you want someplace different, but you're not ready for TOO much adventure, Puerto Rico probably is a pretty good place to start.

Serbia's kind of neat too...everyone is super friendly and speaks English, it costs nothing to stay there, and they have some great parties.

Is the cost of living in Puerto Rico pretty reasonable? I'm not looking for a place where things are dirt cheap and I can have a big place and stuff, but just somewhere reasonable where it can be decent. and that doesn't sound too bad as of the moment.

I just checked, and it seems like Puerto Rico has a higher cost of living.

Say you're an average guy living in Philly making $40,000 a year. If you moved to Amsterdam in the Netherlands, you would only have to make $36,000 to keep your current standard of living as opposed to $49,000 in Puerto Rico (San Juan).

Take a look at the International Salary Calculator. It should give you a good idea of the cost of living for many countries and cities around the world.

We took down Croatia this summer and the coast, at least, is a freaking awesome spot. We checked out a bunch of little towns during a sailing trip. The country is very quickly becoming a better place to be in and moving fast away from the civil strife crap of a decade ago. Plus the women are so hot you'll honestly not believe it until you see it, but holy crap. Seriously.

The world outside the US sucks. That's why everyone wants to move to the land of opportunity. Expect to be taxed >50% of your income outside this country.
