Ooh, all the Journeyman Project games were pretty good. Hard to get them to run on a modern system though. 640x480 2D stretched across a 1680x1050 WS panel doesn't look so good.

Not sure how unpop but Shogo: Mobile Armor Division. It came free with a mouse or something and was a blast -especially the nuclear gun thingy and slinging around like Spider Man.

Heh, I still have a copy of Sacrifice. Battlezone came bundled with my STB Voodoo2 and it was fun, I was really surprised.

thought of another one... no idea of how popular it was, but lord of the realms 2 was a very entertaining mix of turn based and RTS...

psychonauts i've heard is good with dissapointing sales

....I was just gonna say. In fact, the Xbox rag mentioned it as one of the best games last year that no one played (guess it was a console game too).

I bought it and played it for awhile. It is a very weird but good game. One of the legions that I never finish.

psychonauts was fantastic, but kinda short and had no replay value

Still worth a try though.

King's Bounty for Genesis (believe it was a precursor to M&M)

Jill of the Jungle was bad, you're just copying my reply to the "good software that's not available any more" thread in off topic !

Red Faction was pretty good

I can't think of anything elseright now!

Like others have said, Giants, Grim Fandango, Planescape, all were amazing games.

I'd like to add:

Vietcong - One of the first nam era games to get it right
Mafia(pc) - Honestly, the most fufilling action game I have ever played
GhostMaster - unique strategy game with alot of sims-type humor

Panzer General and Combat Mission Berlin to Barbarossa spring to mind as two that have not been mentioned yet.

I going to reach WAY back to some of the old adventure games I played, Gobliins, Gobliiins and Amazon. Goblins had some mind bending puzzles and Amazon had some really funny stuff that made fun of the whole adventure game genre, like stuffing a ladder in your pocket.

I think Panzer General was very popular......about 15 years ago. It spun off Fantasy General (one of the very coolest games of all time), Panzer General 2 (meh) and some other 'General' I can't remember.

Battlezone, as mentioned previously, was an awsome game...I think one thing that wasn't mentioned was it's great story! I loved the whole "real space race" concept, and how they also tied the story into Greek mythology. The second game was pretty cool too, but it got pretty hard and I never finished it.

Another great action/strategy hybrid was Hostile Waters: Antaeus Rising. While not as good as Battlezone in my opinion, it had some cool concepts (AI Personality chips were great!) That game also got very hard once the "alien" enemies showed up. Never finished it.

It's really too bad the action/strategy concept never took off. It's funny that Battlezone was the first to do it (if you don't count that other wierd one whose name I forget that came out right before it but was in development for less time) and perfected the control scheme for the genre (imho).

I too was going to mention Battlezone. It's still absolutely worth playing, has run fine for me on xp, and with the texture updates still a quite decent looking game these many years later. If a master server were still supported I'd probably still enjoy a strat game now and then

Tribes Vengeance could have been a great game. The single player element was pretty good in itself, but a total lack of enthusiasm by Vivendi in it's release ensured weak sales from the start, and the subsequent failure to support the game with a much needed patch.

The Tribes franchise is unique among "team shooters", most especially because of the use of jetpacks. The learning curve of the games is tad higher than other shooters because of this, but it remains a special niche in the fps genre that has yet to find the mainstream.

The original game has been free for some time, and I recommend trying it to see the potential. Within the Tribes community there is a saying "Once you jetpack, you never go back."

Ah, my bad, I did'nt have a computer when Panzer General first came out, started playing it around '98. I was'nt crazy about Panzer General 2 either, and the other one you're thinking of is People's General I think.

Completely agree. Halo is by far the most overrated software title available right now.

I remember recoil, fun game although it got old after a little bit. Freelancer was somewhat popular but no where near as popular as it deserved to be, great game although again it got repetitive. On the RPG side, Warlords Battlecry, it combined RPG and RTS elements seamlessly.
