Read any of the History books by Will Durant, buy them used for < $10.

Blue Latitudes by Tony Horwitz. :thumbsup: and funny!
Also by Tony..Confederates in the Attic. Very funny and fact filled.

Embracing Defeat by John W. Dower...A MUST read at some time in your life.

I'm staring at the few hundred history books on my shelves, and reading over all my syllabi from the last four years, and realizing that I don't have a clue what you're really looking for. Can you give me more information so I can make better suggestions? Or would you prefer a list of what you'd end up reading to earn a BA in History with a minor in Poli-Sci?

It's about the last few months of the Confederacy, and the flight of the Confederate government to try to avoid capture. It focuses a lot on John Breckinridge's role in the escape and attempted negotiations.

there are some great books on the Old West and notable people of that period.

I can't remember what they are all called anymore or who the authors are...

I think what he's looking for is more 'accessible' books about history. Books intended for the common man interested in learning about history, not a historian. Stephen Ambrose is a good example, his style of writing is very straightforward.

1776 by David McCullough is another good one, very easy read and very enjoyable. Not sure about his other books.
