I've recently (as in less than a year) come out of the closet and am looking for info to help purge as much of the mythology of God and Jeeeeeesus from my mind. Was raised a believer and now that I'm awake from the 'Religious Matrix'. I still feel lost at times, still find myself getting ready to pray to nothing then catching myself wondering WTH am I doing? Some habits die hard.

Any info to help relieve the madness would be helpful. Of course I could pray to the Atheist God...naaah.

- Use common sense. It provides just about every lesson that religion tries to.
- The human equation. People are irrational (see: religion).
- Science and physics. They explain just about every phenomenon that religion tries to misinform you about.

I should add my own perspective is that I was raised with parents that were/are really into metaphysical/spiritual crap but not really religion. The only church we ever went to sometimes was non-denominational.

While I completely disagree with the whole new age, metaphysical crap just as much, I was nonetheless able to realize at a young age that it's all a farce in the sense that it's a way to provide for those that need it and is not needed for those that see things for what they are.

I do not fault or begrudge people that have faith and I would never try to tell someone they're wrong or I'm right, I just feel it is a tool that is used in good ways and bad to help or control people.

Listen to the "Living after Faith" podcast from http://recoveringfromreligion.org/

They also have a bunch of supports/info on that website...

The LAF podcast made a huge difference to me, a friend recommended it when I described the crazy family I was from.

You always read about different religions purely from the academic perspective. You'll be amazed to find the similarities in most of the major religions worldwide. Then you can say that you are Atheist.. you'll have an answer to why you reject religion XXX and not just Christianity.. if someone asks you.

It is also interesting to read up on Atheistic religions like Buddhism and Atheistic Hinduism.

I took a "world" religion class in college. I was surprised to find how similar most are. Now as a older person i shouldn't been surprised.

I will say i do belive in a "god" but not the bible and think most religions now are fake and bassed on nothing more then control and money.

This guy was in the same position and started documenting his De-conversion and uploading videos that disprove what most Christians (and any religious folk) say with regards to religion.

The videos are in a very philosophical tone but still a good watch.

Also, if you're up to some heavier reading but incredibly thorough and enlightening, I'd recommend you read some Thomas Paine. You can download his full works from project gutenberg for free. You'll want to skip to Volume 4: The Age of Reason. He wrote this volume near completion and then was sent to a prison cell in France. Many Conservatives love to quote him as a champion for the Right-wing movement but he was anything but a good Christian

You can divert that energy into things like meditation.

All I can tell you is that some people early on when they are in your situation say omg I don't believe in god. For most people belief in god is associated with organized religion aka church. They don't like what the church is doing they leave and call themselves atheist.
Think about it what is it you don't believe in? Zombie in the sky? or corporation called a church. Faith and Church are two different things. Do you have faith? Do you believe that there is something after we die? There are christian gay Church out there and some religions don't care who you are attracted to. From what you rite it sounds like you still believe in something but don't like the church because it's not accepting of your sexual orientation.

Being an Atheist is very impractical:

1. If you're a Christian and you die.
-If Atheists were right, you're just dead.
-If Christians were right, you will go to either Heaven or Hell depending on how you live as a Christian

2. If you're an atheist and you die.
-If atheists were right, you just die
-If Christians were right, you just go straight to hell for being wrong.

By that logic, I'm staying a Christian, it's a win/win.

You're aware that by reaching this conclusion with the above logic you would be condemned to hell by God, right? Belief in Christianity and God by Pascal's wager isn't the test of faith that the Bible refers to :whiste: You don't reap the benefits of heaven by saying "Fuck it, what's the harm?" If you truly believe that your God is a fucking clueless idiot.

If I were to judge by your comment above, I'd reach the conclusion that you're on the fence yourself.

3. The Vikings are correct and Thor uses both the Christian and Atheist as nails....

You know, I've always thought that if I were to believe a particular religion it would have to be Norse mythology. Axes, wolves, bears, ravens, volcanoes and beastiality and all centered around conquest and warfare. I can't think of a more badass religion than that. I mean, if you're going to believe something that defies logic then why the hell not go all out?

And when you die they'll put your corpse on your ship with all your belongings, light it on fire and send you out to sea.

George Carlin recommends praying to Joe Pesci.

"Two reasons: First of all, I think he's a good actor, okay? To me, that counts. Second, he looks like a guy who can get things done. Joe Pesci doesn't fuck around."

I don't know what all to advise though. Religion is often used as something of a security blanket - there's an all-knowing, all-loving entity out there, assuming you can put aside the fact that he'll also freely allow you or your family or friends abruptly die in any manner of ways.
We're here on Earth in a Universe that really doesn't care if we exist or not. Purpose in life? We're the ones who are alive, so it's up to us to choose to give it a purpose. As far as nature is concerned, your purpose is to perpetuate your species. If you want to do more than that, go for it. If you choose to be ethical, hey, great. There's no eternal carrot reward dangling in front of you though. Be nice, and maybe people will be nice back, if they so choose.
And of course if you want to be unethical about things, that's also your choice. Just know that society may not approve of it. But there's no eternal fire or anything awaiting you. You've got this shot at life, and then that's it. You return to the state of non-consciousness you enjoyed prior to birth. So it goes.

Maybe it's not as comforting and such, but...oh well. I don't find any comfort in a deity that claims to be all-knowing and all-benevolent, yet the world is the way it is, with the only excuse being, "Well your ancestors many thousands of generations ago screwed it up, so I'm punishing all of their descendents, forever."

Thanks for the replys and links! It's a typical Monday where things are going wrong everywhere at work. Will respond in more detail when I get home.

I did study Hinduism and Buddhism and I credit Buddhism for helping me escape the religious lie. And no I'm not gay wise guy. lol
