So whats a good keyboard to buy? I virtually know nothing about them. I have a cheap $20 walmart keyboard. I have never had an expensive one. I have a G500 mouse and that is GREAT. Trying to get into keyboards now. What does everyone recommend? I want something around $100. Full sized keyboard for gamers and it has to be wired.

Unicomp Classic 104 from www.pckeyboard.com which is basically the same design as the very long lasting and legendary IBM model M.

You could even get a used IBM Model M if you don't mind using a 20 year old Keyboard.

If you don't want to use that, you could look at a Ducky Shine 3

The unicomp would be a poor choice for gaming. The buckling spring mechanism is noisy. And its only 2kro. And it has no macro keys or dedicated volume control.

Corsair/Gigabyte/Coolermaster have gaming keyboards with macro keys/backlighting/volume control. Some are mechanical using cherry switches. Filco/Ducky if you prefer ordinary mechanical keyboards with no extra keys.

Unicomp totally dropped the ball by not having a NKRO SKU. They would have nearly monopolized the gaming market had they released something 5 years ago. While Cherry switches are great, they just don't hold a candle to the tactility of BS.

Micro Center carries the backlit Duckys in black, brown, blue and red for about $100 and change -- we got a couple of them here, and are pretty happy with them so far, after O-ring mods. But if you were near an MC you could try one out.

Edit: doesn't look like you are -- sorry about that

That's partially true with old 80s/90s IBM model Ms, it can do certain 3 key combos (Like Control+Alt+Delete) and having tested with key test software there are cases where you could press 4 keys down.

In the case with the Unicomp Classic 104 usb which I have, it comes with newer a controller board which supports 6KRO.

Just FYI.

The more junk that a keyboard has, the more that can break. I can't think of too many cases you want to press 6 keys down at once.

I'm gonna go to a local frys tomorrow and see what I can pick up. Mechanical keyboard is the best way to go though for sure? So no G510's?

FYI, the Unicomp keyboards don't have 6KRO. Try holding the W and A keys and then the s key won't register. It is hard for unicomp to make an NKRO keyboard because the buckling springs have a membrane under it and membranes naturally can't accommodate the diodes for NKRO. I own a Unicomp BTW. Still a great keyboard because NKRO is overrated.

No its not the best way for sure. A good membrane gaming keyboard might feel better for you.

Mine is made 12/2013 and it is 6KRO
Absolutely no offense intended but since this is the first time I've ever heard this you can understand why I would be skeptical. I sent a message to Unicomp to confirm/deny 6KRO on newer boards.

Definitely crossing my fingers on this!!!

*edit*

Given the way we connect our switch matrix, I guess our statement about phantom keys and rollover is, unfortunately, complicated.

Our keyboards will support any one to four modifier key combination ( Shift, Control, Alt or GUI keys) plus a fifth key as long as 1) no Left+Right modifier keys(Left+Right Shift, Left+Right Control, etc. ) are involved in the combination and 2) neither the Pause key nor the Caps Lock key are the fifth key. Our original intent was to support multikey sequences required by any Microsoft OS or Application and to the best of my knowledge, that's still true.

Of course our keyboards will support other key combinations larger than five key sequences without generating a phantom key situation and there are some 3 key sequences which will generate a phantom so it's difficult to a generic statement beyond the one above.

As for rollover, the HID and boot protocol standards limit our USB keyboards to six key rollover. The buffer sizes and key processing in our PS/2 controller limit those keyboards to 7 or 8 key rollover.

Thanks
- Zach

I got the razer blackwidow. It's pretty nice this is my first mechanical keyboard I have ever bought and I do not think I will be going back.

That's not how the key rollover numbers are defined. If there is even a single 3-key combination that fails to register correctly, the keyboard is 2KRO, such as the Unicomps and some of the awful Razer mechanicals (ironically, Razer has very prominently advertised "advanced anti-ghosting" features in conjunction with those keyboards, while 99% of their mechanical competition had NKRO and thus total absence of ghosting).

NKRO is not some fiddly special feature that ups failure rate. On modern mechanical keyboards it's the standard.

For me NKRO is a must for purely practical reasons. There was a time when I tried five different cheap membrane boards at work (all the models the IT department happened to have) and every single one failed to produce some 3-key shortcut I use for programming. I use Caps Lock as Ctrl, so mechanically speaking, the failing combinations tended to be of the form Caps-Alt-something or Caps-Shift-something. If I remember correctly, some of the keyboards were actually 1KRO and failed Caps-R or Caps-F12!

I have always been partial to Logitech, so I picked up the G710+ from Best Buy for $110. Coming from a G15 it is amazing.
