Im building my system for college. I am heavily into games and would like a 19" monitor but dont know if its possible. Any college students out there use a 19"? If i was to get a 19" monitor it would probably be a liyama. They seem to be some of the best. However if i have to drop to 17" I would like to go with something like a sony. Anyone else have suggestions on great college monitors. I am looking to spend under 450 bucks.

You can get a really nice 19" Sony G400 for under $450. The Sony E400 can be had even cheaper. The only real differences between the two is that the G400 will do 85 Hz at 1600 x 1200 and the E400 only does 75 Hz at that same resolution. The G400 also has another RGB connector for hooking up another computer to it. Check Price Watch for the lowest prices.

Go to a computer fair or shop around for a refurbished. You cannot go wrong buying a monitor used. Bought my 20" used for $200, will always by a used after this experience, will never waste money on out of box. Moniters last forever.

SONY 19inch. you will thank your eyes. When you start writing 20page papers and being up all night till the crack of dawn or 1 hour before class at 8 or 9am. If you have $450 dollars to drop on a monitor get a (1) SONY 19inch or (2) Hitachi 19inch. the only problem is carrying that monitor up/down stairs when you have to move out of the dorms at the end of the semester or just the regular moving a college student does during those 4 years (hopefully ).

It seems strange to me that he is asking about a monitor for college when his budget is fairly high. My guess would be that he wants one that can fit in his dorm room and that he can transport easily. I have had numerous problems just trying to get my 17" to fit right in my dorm room. I just got a 19" and I think that it may become an even bigger problem simply because the desk space is shallow and shelves above the desk don't offer a lot of space for a large monitor. I may have to do a few rearrangements of supposedly permanent furniture to get my stuff to fit. Good luck.

Wow, I don't know what kind of dorm rooms you guys have, but I couldn't fit a 19" monitor into mine. In fact, it was tough getting my 17" monitor set up. Now, if you live in an off-campus apartment or something like that, then you could get a 19" monitor. But 17" is fine for me. It's also saves money, something every college student needs.

The reason i was suggesting the liyama visionmaster 450 was primarily the size of the monitor. It is barely larger than standard 17" monitors. I do want a high quality monitor and am willing to pay up to 450 bucks but the less i spend would be better. If I spend less i will probably buy something like a digital camera for college. Any more good suggestions. The replies have been great.

ViewSonic GS790. It's a 19" and is #3 on pcworld.com top ten 19" monitor list. The best thing about it other than it's Quality. is it's footprint. Look at the dimension's. They claim to have the same footprint as some 15". Check out epinions.com as well they have good thing's to say about it. Can be had for around $300.00.

How much better is a flat screen monitor. Is it worth the extra hundred dollars i would have to pay to get one?

I don't think the flat screen is worth the extra money. but i do think the trinitron is.

<< I thought trinitron was a type of flat screen >>

Some are truely "flat," while others have a slight curvature to them. The newer Sony monitors look flat because the actual tube sits about 1/4" behind the glass. To the naked eye it looks flat, but if you get up real close you can see a slight curve to it.

I go to the University of Kentucky and boy oh boy do I have monitor troubles. Last year I had my dell 17 incher and had to use a desk drawer for the keyboard and even then the monitor barely fit underneath the bookshelf above it. This coming year I have a different room in a different housing complex thingy and am wondering if getting a 19incher was a big mistake. I may be in good shape though because the 19 incher that i have is the iiyama visionmaster pro 451 which has a small footprint and short depth and a great size overall for the 19 inch screen it provides. We'll see how it goes, I can only hope now. The room I'm going into is much better than my old one though, but its farther from classes.
