Asus, Acer, and MSI all make good netbooks. You may just want to try narrowing your options down (websites like Newegg, eBay, and even Best Buy) by comparing prices, looking at models, etc. Then do research on models you are interested in.

I just bought an MSI Wind for $340 on eBay. It's the 6-cell battery model (U100), and that was a pretty good price. There's also the newer U120, which is basically just a face lift of the U100 (but you can't upgrade the RAM).

Your criteria gives you tons of options...I wanted to make a Hackintosh netbook, so the MSI Wind was the best choice for me.

Is a netbook really for me? All I want is a light notebook for email and surfing the internet. No games, is this for me??

they are indeed tiny. i dont mind spending an hour or two with mine to browse the web or do something minor. i wouldnt use it as a regular use machine if i didnt have an external monitor to hook it up to.

I have the Asus 1000HA and the 10" screen is pretty tolerable. I picked it up for about $310, but you could get the next model up, the 1000HE, which includes a slightly faster cpu, better keyboard, wireless n, and bluetooth, for about $370 shipped.

I've gotten pretty used to it, in fact I am using it right now. The battery lasts 5-6 hours and it's just the right size for me to take to class and play old school games like fallout or starcraft on.

I bought a 1000H at Best Buy for $329 a few weeks ago, then found out the 1000HE was just around the corner. I ended up selling the 1000H last week, and just today got my 1000HE in the mail from NewEgg. The keyboard is much better than the 1000H, and the battery life is much much better (about 7 hours casual computing with brightness and CPU all the way up). In the $300/$400 price range, the 1000HE is the best you can get. It's getting tons of praise all across review sites.

I got mine, a 1000HA from ZZF for $299.99, two days ago.
As soon as the 2gb dim arrived, there went the 1gb and the preloaded XP.
I'm happy to report that it's now become a full blown Vista Ultimate (SP1) with all drivers are absolutely 100% functional.
It runs Office 2007 at a surprising fluid speed (but no way, not faster than my gaming desk top in sig) along with running other apps like iTune etc.
The only minor complaint is that the battery lasts only 5.5 hrs (Vista) as compared to 6 in XP but that's more than enough to last a coast-2-coast flight for me.
Overall I'm very happy with this one as I wasn't with the Acer 8.9 in which I did return to the store since its 3hr battery and a 8.9" did not quite cut it.

The Acer is definitely a compromise, and I certainly wouldn't use one as a main laptop. I bought the 8GB SSD version basically as a coffee shop laptop, and I can literally fit it in my coat pocket. In that was it's perfect for my uses.
