Take the time to just BE THERE. There are more than a few things I'd like a "re-do" on during my own mother's illness.

Just be with her.

No flowers allowed in the Cardiac ICU. My brother is a coffee snob and he makes sure we (family) all get plenty off good coffee. He also supplies the staff. they won't let mom have coffee in any of her feeding tubes.

Doing something - your messages and good wishes are awesome - you guys are great, thank you!. Mom got to read some of the replies to her original post , before they pumped her full of meds, pain killers, etc, before surgery. She smiled. Hasn't smiled since, but she's being monitored for all sorts of things.

She's breathing, her heart is way stronger than the docs expected. blood sugar is okay, BP isn't good, but she's full of keppra (minor seizures) and steroids. Lots of brain activity. I wish I could take a picture of her with all of her wires, tubes, monitors, devices and everything. But I'd better not.

Anyway, today's excitement- the man in the bed next to her died this afternoon. They gave him some medicine, and he started flipping out and making noise.

Now, people often die in the ICU, but usually quietly, and in the middle of the night.

It was creepy. Mom has a lawyer, who has her medical power of attorney, and all that stuff. He's here all the time, keeping an eye on her. The guy who died got the wrong medication, and it killed him. I'm so glad mom's lawyer is here. He's a legal partner of the guy she used to date, so he knows her really well, and he's a great guy.

Anyway, when this guy died, mom's numbers were affected. Even though she's not awake and aware, but you could see it in her heart monitoring, and in her brain waves.

It sure affected me, but I was right there when the whole thing happened.

Soon as I get all my messages sent and get off the laptop I'm just going to sit here and hold mom's hand. If I can find her hand through all the wires and stuff. I need my mommy - and if she needs me, I'm here.

Best wishes. I hope she recovers and posts here again!

That sounds like a terrible experience and I'm sorry you both had to go through it...but we can't wait for your mom's return to posting here

Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage.

Glad she has such a strong support group caring for her. Sorry for having to experience someone elses passing. She can feel your strength.

Good updates so far, though it's a shame about the guy in the next bed over

Looking forward to hearing more good news! Best wishes to your mom and all of your family.

Shame how many people die due to getting the wrong medication, but this does perhaps show how we are all interconnected to some degree. As far as holding your mother's hand, I think physical contact with a loved one especially (and perhaps even just having loved ones) can help hold someone in this world if that is physically possible.

Here's hoping that your mom gets to watch her grandchildren grow up from our side of the veil.

Thanks for the update. It sounds like things may be looking up. It's awesome that she has such great support from family and friends. I fully believe that makes a huge difference in someone's recovery. Good luck!

Doesn't make me nervous; she has excellent caretakers who are concerning themselves with more important things right now.

More surgery needed. Still bleeding. They're going to operate again on her brain Thursday. Slightly different surgery, they won't remove part of her skull this time. They think they can just drill holes in the skull and access the parts that are bleeding. They've tried all sorts of different meds & things to stop the bleeding, but not successfully.

Her heart is getting steadily stronger. That was the big question of the other surgery. They think the new surgery will be okay heart-wise.

My kids had the flu last week, so I couldn't visit the hospital. That was a tough week. Fortunately , I have two brothers and a sister, so we can provide full visitor coverage for her.

When they told us that mom was likely to die soon, yup, all of us showed up immediately. I live near mom, my younger brother lives with mom, he's the one who takes care of her.

My husband and my older brother's wife add up to 6 of us so there's always someone with her.

Thanks for the good wishes. Looks like she'll need more good thoughts for the next surgery.

Stay healthy, all.
