i'm looking for an action movie where people beat each other up, not cgi gun shows (john wick) or city's being distroyed. recent, i've seen all the classic brawlers.
Most anything by Arnold, Bruce, Sylvester, Chuck, Charles, Steven, Jean, Clint, or any other 70s-80's action stars. Something more recent: The Expendables,

It's kind of interesting that no one has mentioned Taken yet.

I remember Liam beating up the world in that movie.

I prefer my fight scenes imaginative and well choreographed like in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon where they're fighting atop the bamboo trees, but this is the better fight scene overall.

Better something more recent and "old school" as it gets with the practical FX.

Check out Atomic Blonde starring Charleze Theron. Surprisingly she is pretty badass, and did a lot of her own fight scenes, I believe. Pretty much a better looking John Wick.
And yea, the Mad Max posted above, Charleze Theron is badass in that too. I thought Mad Max was a better movie overall, but if you want non-stop hand to hand and gunplay, Atomic Blonde is the ticket.

Found exactly what I was looking for, a movie that reminded me very much of the movies I loved growing up in the 90s but new (because I've seen them all)

Master Z: Ip Man Legacy - watch it!

A lot of great mentions here.

If foreign films are not a turn off, I will recommend the two movies that may be the grandfathers of '80's action movies. Try Akria Kurosawa's "Sanjuro" and "Yojimbo".

If you like Clint's spaghetti Westerns you will quickly recognize Yojimbo as their father.

theres literally thousands of websites devoted exclusively to this.

But anyway,

Cobra
Commando
Death Wish (assuming you dont mind a rape scene)
and of course True Lies.

Web lists focus on classic, I've pretty much seen them all.. I think most of the movies I'm looking for are VOD these days

Though I haven't seen Commando - will fix that this weekend.

It's a comedy, but if you haven't seen Kung Fury yet, that should be your absolute highest priority in life at the moment.

Saw it, didn't do much for me - check out "What's up Tiger Lilly?" the woody allen movie it stole the concept from
WTF? It's fucking hilarious. Are you a robot?

Edit: You're thinking of a different movie, I'm pretty sure...
Edit 2: Yeah, I believe you're thinking of Kung Pow.

Did you ever see OldBoy?

That's maybe my favorite fight scene in a movie. I think the Daredevil Netflix series modeled their best sequences after this.

Awesome man, nice choice. It's nice to see other people discovering and recognizing Asian action films. I watched Master Z myself just a few weeks ago and enjoyed it.

American action movies are so boring by comparison. I used to think I didn't like action films, but as soon as I discovered Hong Kong/Indonesian/Thai action films, I realized I actually do like action films, but the American ones just suck.

Here are some other recommendations in the same vein:
  • Kill Zone 1 / Kill Zone 2 / Paradox
  • Jailbreak
  • The Raid 1 and 2
  • Flashpoint
  • Invisible Target
  • The Protector (Tom Yum Goong)
  • Ip Man 1 and 2 (the mainline series with Donnie Yen, not the spinoffs)
  • The Brink (newer Hong Kong film that just came out)
  • The Man from Nowhere
Basically, any movie with super talented martial artists like Donnie Yen, Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais... you're pretty much guaranteed to have a good time.

The Raid series is one you may have heard of, they are Indonesian martial arts/crime thrillers, and the action scenes are absolutely brutal.

I agree with the above.
They are great ways to get introduced to Kurusawa!

As far as fighting action exploitation films .... The Lone Wolf and Cub movies are frickin amazing!

Commando is a glorious cheese fest
Right up there with The Running Man and Total Recall!

Awesome post - I literally grew up on Jackie Chan, John Woo, Tsui Hark, Woo Ping, and now my favorite movies are Korean thrillers. Asian cinema absolutely floors me.

I APPRECIATE The Raid and the new wave of asian extreme but some of it's difficult for me to stomach - I like the intricate choreography but the gore turns me off, because it's often for the sake of itself and I believe to give Saw fans literal boners (korean movies like old boy don't bother me because the violence has context, it's hard to explain)

Will check through your list for sure - haven't seen much of it, the man from nowhere however is my favorite revenge movie probably of all time (there's something biblically epic about it, but without the philosophizing of Old Boy)

Yeah I realize this a necro but one of my guilty pleasure old school action movies is Demolition Man starring Snipes and Stallone. It's so bad it's good and has just that right balance of '90's action movie pleasure. lol

I wonder how these would fly if released today in the politically-correct SJW online community
