I'm not so upset about incompatable, because I'd never buy one for overclocking, but instead feel bad for users who did due VIAs shaddy behavior. AMD gave out engineering samples of the dual core chips at the beginning of the year to manufactures yet VIA chose to say nothing about thier borked chipset. Guess they got thier money.. "Sorry suckers"

Actually, the VIA marketing guy who said that had to admit he doesn't know the background. We're awaiting an answer from VIA Taiwan.
Point being that basically ALL mainboard makers except ASUS have already announced X2 compatibility of their K8T890 boards.

Nah, you wind yourself up; I just have fun watching. The only reason I posted was taht I was surprised you were taking so long to come to this thread. Mention VIA, and you're there. It's absolutely pavlovian (and kinda sad).

Haven't decided yet. I've got my eyes on that 4800+ and the new SiS Asus 939 mobo as well but it would require me to junk my AGP vid card so I'm kinda hesistant. Besides I'm really happy with the performance of my 3700+ @ 2.5Ghz. But knowing me, I'll somehow insanely rationalize the need for a dual core CPU

You going dual?

yeah but not 4800, waay to rich for my blood when the 4400 is only 200Mhz slower but $400 cheaper, I'll make it a 4800+

I'm not sure what I'm going to do about mobos.. want to see how 480/400 reviews before I make any moves. Want to see next gen graphics, I'm not buying a 6800/850 PCIe when I already have a 6800U+ AGP...

So my date is in limbo... What I'll prolly do is get the 4400, slap it in this NF3 I have, for 2-3 months then re-evalueate the mobo and video situation.

I'd like to have a 2 year machine. e.g. no upgrades for 2+ years but it does'nt seem possible with whats out there right now.

Yeah, the other thing in the back of my mind though is the the whole M2/DDR2 transition mid next year. With my most wanted game F.E.A.R. having the same or similar requirements to HL2 there really isn't any sort of driving force behind an upgrade at this point beyond the multitasking benefits of dual core and the next gen cards look to be expensive (but impressive) as they will likely have premiums for quite a while due to likely supply issues (I refuse to pay above MSRP) I generally like to sit on upgrades for the same amount of time as you. I really need a reason to upgrade and to feel the improvement in performance especially if I'm replacing mobo, CPU, and Vid Card. I'm still on the fence, the fact that Gears of War is X360 exclusive through at least 3Q 2006 makes me even less inclined to upgrade my vid card. We'll see but I think unless I'm just really bored I may wait until M2 and just get a dual then. As you can tell I just don't know atm.

It's absolutely pavlovian (and kinda sad).

As for pavlovian response to VIA related threads, we just need to look who of us got here first and when ... and for the sadness, we just need to look at what this person had to say.

For those already too bored to scroll up, the answers are:

Bar81, 11 minutes after post, nothing.

Do you have confirmation that the ABIT AX8 supports the X2?

I've avoided VIA like the plague since VIA chipset-based mobos are the only ones I've ever had fail on me - SiS and nVidia chipsets have treated me well, and I'll stick with them. I HAVE built a VIA-chipset system for a friend though, and it's still running strong, so maybe I just got unlucky with my others.

OMG!!!! Face. Cut down. Whew, glad you told me about that whole life bit. I really would have thought by now you would have the VIA engineers' (or is that engineer's ) home number(s). I'm disappointed in you.

A professional inquiry - professional in content, wording and attitude - has been issued to VIA engineering. If and when a statement is being returned, it shall be posted here.

This news is George Michael gay. I REALLY hope the 800 and 800 Pro chipsets support dualie's. I'm not so concerned about the 890's right now but if I get a customer that specifically wants PCIe and/or dualie's, I'll be forced to recommend NF4. Although my home machine runs a NF4 chipset and runs very stable (I really didn't expect any major problems), I don't recommend Nvidia chipsets to my customers unless they have good troubleshooting skills. IMO, they have a little ways to be I can give them my stable machine stamp of approval.

Still no word from your beloved VIA? Maybe it's because VIA still makes crap as its main product. From the front page:

The K8T890 chipset, VIA's first PCI Express Athlon 64 chipset, was announced to have full support for dual core Athlon 64s two months ago. However, motherboard manufacturers are telling us now that the current revision of the K8T890 doesn't support dual core AMD CPUs properly and that a later revision of the chipset, due later this month, will add working dual core support.

No news from VIA engineering in Taiwan, no post. Is that too hard to understand?
