Good Overclocking Resources?

Hi,

So I jumped the gun a bit, and bought some ddr2-1066 ram since it was on sale. I've never overclocked before, simply because I didn't know how and I was afraid of killing one of my components. However, with this ram, a new e6750 cpu, and the p5k-e asus board, I really don't think i have any choice!

So I figure the easiest way would be to find some site where people post their settings, find someone with the same hardware as I have and copy them.

I also suppose I should invest in an aftermarket cooler, i'm thinking the tuniq tower.

Can anyone recommend a good resource for me? Or can anyone help me out here?

Here's my other thread, listing the build I just bought: http://forums.anandtech.com/me...=2100644&enterthread=y

Thanks!

no no, skip over the Tuniq tower and get the Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme. It's been getting rave reviews if you been keeping up to date. You really should get it if your serious about overclocking and still want your cpu to last a long time. Remember to get a good 120mm fan with it.

As for settings, you should get at least near 3.0GHz using the stock voltage.

I'd lower the multiplier to 6 and try to shoot for 533 FSB, which would give you a 1:1 RAM ratio. of course you should start with the FSB that TR has and work your way up. Keep your voltage under 1.4 volts and you should be fine.

Edit: (I gotta stop editing my posts...) I realized the good folks over at TR hit an FSB wall at 490MHz. Try your luck, but I'd really recommend keeping the 1:1 ratio, even if it means underclocking the RAM (gasp!)

On a side note, I noticed that you splurged on 4 80mm fans. Not that they won't do the job, but 2 decent 120mm fans would've moved more air plus generated less noise. The good thing is having 4 individual fans gives you a lot of placement options, so it's really a trade-off.

eh, the reasoning behind the 4 fans is the 7 hard drives i have. 1 fan to blow on 3 of the drives, another to blow on the other 3, and 2 exhausts to balance it out.

wait...one to blow on 3, and another to blow on the other 3...what about the 7th HD?!?

could've done with 3 120mm in that case, which still would've made less noise, cover more ground and move more air. But what's done is done, and 4 80mm fans should serve you just fine. I'm just picky when it comes to noise, that's all.

heh, yeah, the lone drive is a bit further from the other six so it'll have empty space around it to keep it cool. that's the thinking at least. maybe i'll just hook up three of the 80mm. not sure how much of a difference that fourth one will make anyhow. i'm thinking the Scythe S-FLEX SFF21E to cool the thermalright.

Just OC'd my Q6600 on my P5K-E Took it to 3.0 with nothing more than changing the FSB to 333. didn't bother to tweak or go any further. The hexus.net threads below are really good.
