Good places to stay in Boston?

Hey guys,

A friend and I are heading out to Fenway to catch a game in September (flying out of LAX). Does anyone have any recommendations on where to stay? How is the public transportation out there?

Update (9/18/2008):

I ended up staying at a hostel for two nights with my friend for $43 a night per person. It was a lot like a dorm room (in size and feel) with 3 bunk beds in very limited space. It was on the corner of Hemenway and Boylston so it was REALLY close to Fenway, which was perfect for us. The last night I was there I crashed at a friends apartment which was right across the street from Fenway too.

We visited Fenway for a tour and a ball game (almost did Saturday's double header, but decided to use the time to explore more of the city), the Freedom Trail, Faneuil Hall, Newbury street, Museum of Fine Art, Sam Adams Brewery, some local parks around Fenway/Northeastern, a few bars along the street, and I love the subway! I wish southern california had an extensive one that allowed us to walk around more instead of having to drive everywhere.

All in all, Boston seemed a lot smaller than I originally thought, the weather was very unpredictable but mellowed out as I was leaving, and the people there are really friendly and helpful. I want to come back for the winter and experience some city snow. Am I crazy?

For that price, you may have to settle for something outside of the city limits. I have consultants coming to work for me all the time and the cheapest they are able to get has been around $250 in Cambridge.

But public transportation is good and can get you to the park easily.

Try priceline.com and you might be able to get a deal in your price range.

Hrm... even the Holliday Inn in Brookline, which is about 2 miles from Fenway, is ~250 night.

I've been looking around a little bit, and I guess what I'm really looking for is what cities can I look for a hotel in...

If I stay in Boston-Burlington can I take a subway or bus to get to the park within a reasonable amount of time? Any other cities that have easy access into the city via public transportation?

Brookline and Newton are both viable as they are in the green line and go right to Kenmore. Most of Cambridge is good, Somerville is okay too.

Once you start getting farther away than that you want to check www.mbta.com and see where the Commuter rail lines run AND if there is reasonable service the day you want to go to the park.

We like to stay at the Marriott on Copley Square and just take the T wherever you need to go...

I took a look on priceline. For $240 you can snag a room at the HJ in Kenmore square. That means no crowded trains after the game!

I don't know if it's a good hotel or not, but if you're going to take the train you'll save ~$20 / day (for two of you) in roundtrip transport by walking.

Check out this Ramada Inn: http://travela.priceline.com/h...3865410043564&plf=PCLH

It's not in a great location, but if they offer a shuttle to the Red line, then you can get to Fenway in ~30 min or so.

Or here:

shuttle would take you to the blue line (I think), which would be an easy transfer at Government Center to the Green Line.

10 minute bus ride + short walk to Fenway or 2 minute walk + 30 min T ride to fenway.

Those links are great!! Thanks everyone for your inputs. I have a few months to look into prices and accommodations, but this gives me a great start.

Shit my landlady has a spare room she might even be willing to rent out for the night (Allston). I can ask her if you're serious.

You could stay in my bedroom at my apartment Wish my roommates would let that happen - we could PRETEND I know you well. Then you could help subsidize the rent I'm still paying....

I've stayed at the HJ in Kenmore. The hotel itself is okay, but the area itself isn't okay - but during the baseball game, it'll be alright. Fenway Park is literally right there.

Unless, you're also coming to go skiing up north in Maine or Vermont, do not come to Boston during the winter. It sucks.
