I am really liking jEdit. Using it in FreeBSD and writing an openGL application that's over 2500 lines of code
so far. Seems to handle the job quite well.
Emacs is the ultimate text editor, but almost everything is done with key combos and the manual has something like 1.5MB.
If you don't want to spend the time it takes to learn Emacs, then I would suggest Crimson Editor.
If you are using this for java editing why dont you get an IDE like http://www.eclipse.org. Eclipse is an excellent Java IDE written mostly by IBM and also they is a really good C++ plug in for it
