I am going to get a new PSU for my Dell XPS 410. What are the BEST brands for PSUs? I want one that'll cost me between $50 and $75 and has a minimum of 450W. Thanks for the help!

Best brands for PSUs? SeaSonic - and anything re-badged but manufactured by SeaSonic. Accept no substitutes.

That XPS PSU is seriously under-rated and should have no problem with anything that's not, say, a 2900XT.

Antec Earthwatts 430Watt

or

Corsair VX450

Edit: oops I missed the fact that you had an XPS 410...I agree with s44...go with what you already have, as you could order the XPS 410 with up to at least an 8800GTS...also you might want to look into the ATI HD3850..it outperforms the 8600GTS at the same price

Finally, someone else with a XPS 410!

I don't think you need a new PSU, do you? It should be fine for not-SLI/crossfire.

Oh, I would go with the Xclio Goodpower anyway.

It's only a 375W PSU though. Do you really think it could handle a video card with a minimum PSU requirement of 400W? Thanks for mentioning that ATI HD3850 card; I'll look into it.

Yeah, the only thing I'm worried about is finding one that'll fit into my case.

well like I said...you could order the XPS 410 with the 8600GTS, so I would think it should be OK...it wouldn't hurt to try it out and if it doesn't work then replace the PSU.

That's a good idea! I could just order the card and see if it works, and if it doesn't then I could get a new PSU.

Another question: Does anyone know how to tell if a PSU will fit into my case? Should I just measure the one I have right now and compare that to the one I'll buy or is there another way?

Thanks again for all of your help!

I believe people have run 8800GTXs off this thing; Dell calls it 375 but it can really put out more power than that. Wouldn't be surprised if it actually has more juice than the Antec 430 (which puts a bit less to the +12V than you might expect).

The 8600GTS barely needs the PCI-E power connector anyway, and would definitely be no problem. But it's not worth buying except at the $100 black friday price -- get the 3850 instead. (I believe Visiontek has the best warranty...)

Your system won't use over 250w, keep stock psu and move on.

You have no clue do you?Just because Seasonic manufactures PSU`s for different companies does not mean that all the brands the are contracted out to make are rebadged.

A rebadged PSU is one that when you take the brand name off it you can slap say a Seasonic name on it and there is absolutely no difference!!

You cannot do that w2ith the Corsair brand or with the PC Power & Cooling brand!

I believe the only thing proprietary about it is that it doesn't have a power button. Looks like all the connections are ATX standard

taken from the anantecharticle you linked

That brings up another point that's important to mention. In the past, Dell has been somewhat notorious for including proprietary power connectors and motherboard designs. Starting about a year ago, all motherboards should now be using a standard 24-pin ATX power connector with an additional 4-pin ATX 12V connector. It was possible to get adapters in the past that would allow the use of a generic power supply, but this is now unnecessary. If you decide that you want something better than the standard 375W power supply in the future, it should not be at all difficult to replace the power supply. It would still be better to get a higher capacity power supply in the first place, especially given the price of the system, but as stated the 375W power supply should be sufficient for the vast majority of users.

Bend tabs? I'm worried about how it secures? Do standard ATX screws work? Plus it looks like there will be a giant gap open under the PSU too.

It does pale rider, just gotta re read it a couple of times, at least that's what did it for me. In the end he is saying that Seasonic also makes PSU's for other company's, like Corsair/PC&P, but those aren't the 'normal' Seasonic PSU's just with a different name on them, they are in fact different, with perhaps other capacitors etc ... So if you were to remove the Corsair name again, you couldn't sell them as a seasonic m12 500w for example, because the 'real' one would vary from the Corsair PSU that has been made by Seasonic. Hope that makes sense ...

It makes alot of damned sense....your nievety concerning PSU smacks on needing some schooling!!

So lets agree that just because Seasonic manufactures PSU`s for Corsair with the Corsair name on them, or for PC Power & Cooling that doesn`t make iether PSU a Seasonic brand PSU!

The quick definition is if you have a Seasonic 500watt PSU and you take the name Seasonic off add say you add a different name such as the ACME 500watt PSU then that would be a rebadged PSU!!

School is out!!

Peace!!

Wow! Thanks for all of the feed back guys! I'm thinking that I'll just go with the PSU I have if what tomoyo, s44, and HOOFan 1 says is true. I'm not planning on running anything in SLI (my mother board won't even support it), over clocking, or adding more hard drives, CD/DVD drives, fans, etc. etc. All I would like is a better video card for gaming. I'm tired of having AA off and running things at 800x600 res. I actually had to stop playing Halo 2 because the frame rate was so bad. If there is one thing I can't stand, it's bad frame rates.
