What are some good speakers for less than $100. I don't really need more than 2.1, though if the price is right I don't mind more...

I just want good AND accurate sound. I don't need lots of bass. These will be computer speakers.

i have the LX4's that i got for $220 out the door. they are the same satellites, just without the sub. great quality, strong mids(not like anything from logitech, their speakers have non-existent mids), non-squeaky highs (like anything from logitech) and acceptable base.

these satellites will blow anything away in terms of quality from logitech

i also second getting a T-Amp if u want 2.0 satellites. u can get some pretty nice speakers with an upgrade. insignia stuff sucks tho haha. and those logitech speakers should be FAR right now. they are about 5 years old. have only a loud, boomy bass, and squeaky highs. quality sucks imo

They were supposed to be a pretty amazing deal at their original ~$50 price, but I think they're still a good way to do for $75-ish.

For $50 now, I think one of the common ways to go for bookshelf speakers would be the Polk R150s from Outpost.

if you got room for an amplifier and home theater bookshelf speakers you can go that route. Probably overkill though. You can get good used speakers on craigslist for pretty cheap. Unlike other technology, old speakers hold their ground over years. I just picked up some used infinities for $75 each (must be about 20 years old) that beat my brand new boston acoustic VR2 $400 retail/$250 street price). You can get a bookshelf speaker deals for like $40/pair on hot deals forums. Something like these polk r150 for $50/pair. If you don't have an amp you can find an old one online for under $50. Amps take alot of space unfortunately but offer more options with hookups and upgradeability.

A receiver would tend to offer a lot more options for inputs, but an amp would tend to have limited connectivity. Probably only a single analog input on it depending on what kind of amp you're talking.

Unless by amp you mean integrated amp, and then yeah, that would be another option too for more inputs.

(I would guess they are available cheaper at an e-tailer other than direct from Klipsch)

You can almost get the 2.1s for $100 as well.

Random reseller example

Refurb from Klipsch?

How does the Klipsch pro-media 2.1 compare to the new 2.1 speakers out there now? I noticed that it's over 5 years old now. I was interested in them before, but the price was much higher years ago.

Still one of the top 2.1 computer speaker sets, but they're still... well... computer speakers.

IMO for best sound without being artificially bass heavy - bookshelf speakers and something to amplify them with. I'm not familiar with Best Buy's house brand stuff (Insignia) but I've heard good things about the T-amp. Unfortunately the original inexpensive T-amp is no longer being made. There are two models currently available and the cheapest one is around $60-70. At that price you can almost get a brand new stereo receiver. IIRC Best Buy has a Sherwood stereo (not surround sound) receiver for $80 regular price.

For speakers, IMO almost any bookshelf speakers made for home audio will sound better than almost any speaker marketed for home theater or multimedia for accuracy. Multimedia speakers tend to try pushing too much volume through too little a box. Home theater speakers have a different goal than home audio speakers, and that is to emphasize voice and try to blend in. Home audio speakers try (mostly) to just be relatively accurate. Again, this is just IMO.

For bookshelf speakers, whenever Frys/Outpost has a Polk sale those R15 speakers for around $50 can't be beat. Otherwise, my favorite speakers are the BIC bookshelf speakers, either the DV62 or DV52 (6" or 5" woofer). IMO those are some really good sounding speakers.

If I can find the Promedia 2.1 for under $130, that'd be nice. Under $130, shipped.

How about a HTIB? Home Theater In a Box.

RCA RT2760 $50 +ship (shipping to me was $15)

This is a 5.1 setup with center speaker, two front, two rear and a subwoofer. It comes with a receiver that has digital coaxial and optical inputs, plus even a USB port (probably plays MP3 off flash drives).

manuals

Price is supposedly good until 10/18.

The 2.1 Klipsch are the best 2.1's I've experienced. The sub needs constant adjusting - can easily overwhelm - but once a volume is set, the sound is excellent for pc speakers. The Klipsch has the least plastic look and feel to it and no remote. The sub enclosure might even be built with wood - at least pressboard. I'm always dissapointed with any 2.0 - even high-end ones. Seems like music with freq. <150 missing just doesn't cut it. If I have to go 2.0 - usually space considerations, I just use something like the $30 Dell soundbar.

Have read good reviews on M-Audio regarding accuracy but all mention the lack of low end.

I think I'll go the the klipsch promedia 2.1. While I'd love a non computer speaker setup, I don't have the space for it now.

I've seen some poor reviews on the quality of the klipsch, I just hope I'm not going to be one of them.
