Good scotch as a gift?

I'm pretty sure that a type of this scotch was my favorite of all time, but it was a gift to my father so I'm not sure about the $.

12 or 15 yr Glenlivet, 12 or 15 yr Glenfiddich are the easy choices. Johnny walker green label is also a good choice. 12 yr macallan is also a good choice. I personally don't like macallan at all, but it is a well recognized name along with the other three.

If you know he drinks scotch a lot, lagavulin 16 is simply an awesome gift. I don't know of a single scotch snob that would turn down free lagavulin.

Bitch please, I don't need to be educated about scotches. Why anyone would even recommend an islay if they're not sure the recipient is a scotch fan is beyond me. I tend to prefer the speysides myself, but again, I'm not a huge scotch fan. Stop being a pretentious prick.

I've had Balvenie doublewood, tasted like soap and I could barely finish the bottle. I had another type of balvenie that escapes me and I thought it was quite good.

The point is, your recommending a bunch of scotches that purists or aficionados would prefer, but if you don't know the guy, play it conservative.

You have a strange palette if Oban or Balvenie makes you want to puke. I would refrain from recommendations in that case.

One of the greatest gifts I have gotten as an adult was a bottle of Macallan18 year. Not only was it a good scotch, but the card with it said "I know you like your scotch like your women, barely legal". I still smile when I think of it.

You may want to go off the reservation a bit and find something different yet the same. There's a off brand called "Signatory" that takes other people's scotch and finishes them. The result is something that tastes like the original, yet different enough to be impressed. I received a bottle of Signatory that was a Macallan and it was awesome. I still think of that bottle.

Because unless you know the guy's palette, you're likely to get him a bucket of piss he doesn't like. McCallan is well known, very well balanced, and even a guy who isn't a big fan of scotch (myself) can appreciate it.

A good bottle of Laphroig or Oban would make me puke.

I like Total Wine Places because they have staff reviews as well as tastings at times.

For gifts sticking to the tried and true brands are a good way to go.

I hate champagne but I love Martini and Rossi Asti. Some have bought me nicer champagnes that I just ended up serving to others.

I second the Johnny Walker Green Label. If your colleague is a regular Scotch drinker, then he's probably had Macallan 12 a lot. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to receive a bottle of Macallan 12, but on my last day of work a colleague got me a JWGL and I was pleasantly surprised. I wasn't even aware that there was a Green Label. If you're unsure, definitely stay away from the Islay malts. I love giving people a whiff of my Lagavulin and seeing the expressions on their faces...

I agree. Scotch sucks and most of the people who drink it are poseurs who only drink it because they think it makes them look/sound cool. It's the same with wine snobs and cigars. That being said, the best scotch is whatever one the poseur in question likes.

It's an acquired taste. I learned to like it on a trip to the scottish highlands with my parents. I like the burning sensation and smoked aftertaste it leaves. I guess that's the reason why some people like to smoke.

I also like aged rhum because it has a taste of burnt sugar, vanilla and chocolate.

I don't know of anyone who drinks Scotch to look cool considering its high price.
