Good simple easy monitoring tool?

I've used solarwinds ipm and a few others. Someone was asking for a good one, that has an app for their tablet. It's only 10 servers as they told me and not very many other devices. What's a good one you'd recommend that doesn't have too many false positives and easy to setup, ptrg I've heard is good and cost effective He wants something that can be trial demo for 30 or more days with full functionality.

It all depends on what level of BS you are willing to put up with and your skill level.

On the free end there is mrtg, cacti, nagios etc and on the pay end there is solarwinds, Whats up gold from ipswitch (love it, very easy to setup) and many others

PRTG gets my vote. It's very easy to setup, and very powerful depending on how far down the rabbit hole you wish to go.

The trial is 30 days fully functional and after that 30 days it reverts to a free version that supports 30 sensors (a few of which are taken automatically for the probe machine itself.)

As far as scale goes, I currently have the free 30-sensor version setup for couple small businesses that will alert me if their internet goes down, certain traffic thresholds are reached, or if there are server issues. On the opposite end of the scale, I've used it to monitor about 18,000 separate sensors across 35 sites around the country for a property management company.

As an example, at that level I could sit in my office and tell you the inbound traffic on a specific port, on a specific switch, in a specific building, on a specific property 2,500 miles away.

I used to work at a database company that back in the 1990's create a predictive downtime network diagnostic tool named Q. They used to be located in Maryland but the company was bought out and I could be wrong but I think it could have been rewritten as solar winds or something else.

But anyway I really liked Q a lot and was ahead of its time when it came out.

Anyone remember "Q" ? And yes it was named after Q from Star Trek TNG.

another vote for PRTG. we demoed it at work and im trying to talk the boss into letting me order.

i used IP monitor at my last job, that was about 2 years ago, and i like PRTG a lot more.

Pandora is another option. I need to finish mine (envirostate is what I called it) so I can release it to public. Biased opinion but I like it better than all the ones I tried.
