I will be starting my senior year at the university in a few weeks and am trying to decide on a topic for a directed project in the field of computer information systems.

Linux (kernel hacking, drivers, etc.)
Web Programming (PHP, CGI, CSS, Javascript, Java)
Compression Algorithms/Software
Network Security

I am looking for an interesting and unique topic, but one that is feasible to complete during the 16 week semester. Any ideas are greatly appreciated!

A directed project is an independent study course. I first must decide on a topic and have it approved by the department. Afterwards, I will begin with preliminary research and set out my plans and goals for the project. I will work on the project, be it programming and/or design based, and give a presentation at the end of the semester. Again, I'd like to find something that it unique and attainable.

Pick a local non-profit find out what computer needs they have. If they have any needs that can fit the requirements of your project, do that.

I can't do anything with a non-profit organization if that it what you are suggesting. I was leaning towards something with web programming as I'd like to further my skills with PHP, CGI, etc. I just can't think of a project to work on.

OK, this is something I did just for the hell of it when I was a sophomore... it was a project I used to teach myself PHP. I made a website where students could post used books for sale. Before that the best way to sell used books was to print out flyers and put them on every bulletin board on campus (now imagine 2000 students doing that). It worked a lot better my way.

It wasn't terribly difficult - took me about 2 days and I didn't know PHP before I started. But you could expand it - make it a sort of campus eBay. Or maybe do a CMS that's targeted toward colleges with a plugin architecture that makes it expandable.
