English: Thank you.
Mandarin: Shea Shea (or shea shea nee)

In English, that would be pronounced "Shay shay", as in Shea Stadium, when it is actually "She she".
No?

I was born in China, and I move to the US about 9 years ago. Right now, I can barely understand mandarin, and only my parents can understand my broken Chinese. What I'm trying to say is that it is more or less impossible to learn Chinese without moving to China or being in an environment where everyone speaks Chinese.

Lets not even begin to think about learning how to read and write Chines. *shudders*

i thought it was more like sheh sheh?

i wouldn't say it is impossible to learn chinese. its just when your parents understand english you don't really need to take an effort to keep up your chinese i understand it very well, but i've lost the ability to rapidly form sentences and retrieve vocabulary on the fly to speak it i can write a little and thats starting to goh aha

...I don't think so. It's definetly not Shay Shay but if you say it fast, it can be she she.

One thing you must NEVER do in front of her parents is say you know some Japanese.

I had a friend who HAD a Korean g/f. He wanted to show off to her parents, but the fool spoke Japanese and got himself banned from their daughter and from their house. I'm pretty sure if your g/f's parents are og Chinese then they will dislike Japan as much as his g/f's Korean parents. Then again, if you know no Japanese, that shouldn't be a problem.

before i read your thread, i was going to tell you to get a chinese speaking girlfriend.
but i guess that's why you're trying to learn in the first place.

well... talk to her a lot... but only in chinese.
try it.
practicing is the best way to learn.

you MUST learn from a chinese person...or an american who can SPEAK the language PROPERLY (i emphasize this b/c there are buttloads of "chinese-speaking" americans who have no pronounciation ability)

Beyond that...you need lots of time. This language is not at all "easy" to learn; there's no way in heck you'll be proficient quickly (unless you really are a linguistics genius). I mean...for 1 thing, there are like 40,000 characters...each character has a meaning; but most people only know like 5000ish if i remember right. And for every combination of phonetics used to generate the sound of a character...there are a max of 5 tonal variations. Prounonce it wrong and no one will know what you're talking about

edit: it's not impossible to learn...there's an american on cctv back in Taiwan (comedy stuff), he speaks EXCELLENT chinese...i was astounded.

Uhh...not all the phrases there are entirely correct, or at least not very common. For example, i dont believe ANYONE says wu an (good day)

Uh...the words for aunt are fine-ish, but some people do not say it like that; just like for grandparents there are multiple variations

and...goes w/o saying, but if you can help it, dont talk as slowly as the speaker does when ur in a conversation (practice with ur gf )
