Looking for a pair of good workout gloves, for lifting weights, mainly when I'm doing back. I had a cheap pair of was Mart ones and they were terrible. I'd like to buy something quality, any recommendations? What are some good places to buy online as well.

Some (most?) people will say to get some chalk and let the calluses grow.

I have a cheap pair from Dick's sporting goods. Just make sure that they fit very tight. I usually use them when using heavier weights like on deadlift. For bench press, I go no gloves.

Gf doesn't like the rough hands from lifting weights, and my hands die when doing back, especially rows.

I have always just used a cheap pair from Walmart. I usually wash them every other week to keep them tight.

So do gloves truly affect lifting at all? Like how much you can deadlift/row/bench?

gloves weaken your grip because they're increasing the radius of the bar, slightly, and because they aren't solid and compress a little reducing the force applied directly to the bar. They also make you look like a tool

That's a little harsh. I don't use gloves personally. I work with my hands a lot and having them rough comes in handy. And working out with gloves > not working out at all.

I have the same problem. I've noticed that the increased grip from the gloves allows me to lift heavier weights and more reps per set than I do without them. The gloves I use are Harbinger's from The Sports Authority.

When doing exercises that require the weight to move slightly (hammer curls) or your hands to move (pull-ups) the gloves help immensely.

These are the ones I use but there are others that have hooks and help alleviate the issue of grip, like these

Well when I lifted yesterday, I thought of you and ditched my gloves

My gym doesn't allow chalk. I mostly don't need gloves except for back. But I definitely have much better grip with them on. Also sometimes my hands get sweaty so it also allows for better grip. Why would holding something with a larger radius weaken your grip?

A larger radius means you can't wrap your fingers all the way around. The thinner the bar the better your grip and the easier it is to lift.

I won't join a gym that doesn't allow chalk, it's a safety thing. Also as a safety thing I would use straps before I used gloves. It's not ideal but it's the choice I would make if I had to.

go to home depot or a hardware store and get some work gloves that cover your entire hand.

or see if ur local gnc, nutrishop sells the 5-6$ big back grips, and there are taco shell grips I forget what they are called but i own some.

I find harbingers to last maybe 3-6months if ur lucky and train 5-6 days a week and go heavy often. Most all "gym gloves" aren't very durable and arent meant to take the same sort of beating some form-fitting work gloves from a hardware store would do (they will look as good as high-end "gym gloves" without the finger tips cut off).

I've gave up on cheap harbingers and traditional "gym" gloves because those break down really quickly.

Though I'd go with the first ones.

I use these for everything. Except deadlifts, bb rows (just anytime the weight gets ridiculous - then its cowhide straps)

Ive owned 4 pairs, lost some gave away some- love em to death.

nope ~ people get them usually for calluses, or for certain grip situations

* best grip is chalk + hands

I'm completely uninterested in having nickle sized calluses rip off during a rep and having to deal with the mess. Even with gloves or grips etc I still build up purty calluses.
