Sorry to hear that man I remember seeing your posts in the for sale and exchange sections. I hope things get better for you.

You have no family absolutely at all that you could stay with?

I have one older sibling and one parent that are still alive. Staying with either is not an option. BTW my wife hates both of them and none of them speak to each other.

I felt comfortable enough to post an update for anybody that cares. I missed this place enough to come back, so obviously I do.

A lot has happened while I've been away. I'm still married, I have a better relationship with my family and I decided to share my diagnosis and the problems I had earlier that I left somewhat of a veil over.

Aside from having Marfan Syndrome and the accompanying hardware (two synthetic valves and a pacemaker), I also have been diagnosed as BiPolar I about 8 yrs ago.

In the past 4 years, I have been hospitalized numerous times (in the high 'teens) with a handful of those being psychiatric ward stays. The most recent hospitalization for my heart was December 23, 2014 and lasted only one night.

I'm currently on disability, backdated to May '13. Wife and I are are working things out best we can given the circumstances. She has her own health issues and is dealing with them accordingly. I will not go into details on this.

Anyhow, fwiw I'm back. I don't get out much, lost my car and have no means of transportation at the moment so I have some spare time. I figured I'd come back to a community I'd been part of for a long time.

Thanks.

What's being bipolar like? Do you get insanely emo for no reason... but you know you're being crazy?? Or do you have no idea and you feel like your behavior is normal?

Asking because I had an absolute nut of an ex gf, who I think was bipolar. She did/acted like a whack job out of no where, over the smallest crap, and never once recognized that it was not logical/acceptable behavior.

I hear this question a lot so I'll answer to be polite.

Often times, I am unaware when I am having an episode of mania/depression until after it occurs. But this varies greatly. Yesterday, for example, I knew I had a manic episode oncoming and warned my wife. I talk/type fast, have racing thoughts, want to act out (for me it's spending money, gambling, strip clubs, u know, the fun stuff) and become hypersexual. It's like I'm a teenager on acid.

But most of the time they are depressive episodes of varying degrees. Fun fact: according to a recent psychiatric study, 68% of people having episodes that are BiPolar are depressive episodes (according to my psychiatrist who diagnosed me 8 yrs ago).

I think that kind of answers your question. Watch Michael Clayton. Good profile of someone with severe Manic episode who is an otherwise highly successful person.

More recently Silver Linings Playbook is good, too.

I'm sure I have a few things lying around...like blu-rays, that are accessible.

Unfortunately, the rest of it is thrown into my old office that I can't access. Besides, it doesn't hold much value (old tech, broken laptops, lcd monitors, computer case, etc.) I.E. it's killing me I can't find an Xbox 360 game and a laptop I know is in there. I'm currently using a 6 yr old HP.

I can't lift over 20lbs and it's impossible to negotiate my way through the room to sort the stuff on my own. It's a work in progress. I'm hoping my wife will have the time and will to help me with it soon. She's singlehandedly cleaned it out 3 times in the past 5 yrs. I'm kind of a hoarder, too.

In fact, I need to contact someone re: trade that I kind of left twisting in the wind. Thanks for the reminder.

I see you mentioned Marfan's...how tall are you if you don't mind my asking?

If you want details about my experience with Marfan feel free to PM me. My father had it. My sister has it. My dad was 5'11" and was undiagnosed until his 50's. My sister is 5'8" and was the first to be diagnosed around the age of 24. I was about 19 and I'm 6'2.5" tall, weigh 176 lbs. I was skinny back then, weight about 160. I'm now in my mid 40s.

There are so many different types of mental illness and so little that we really understand about them that it's impossible to guess what you girlfriend had going on.

Even being bipolar isn't like 'I have the chicken pox'.

Some times you know you're acting abnormally and you can try to restrain yourself or remove yourself from the situation. Other times you don't realize until it's pointed out to you. Other times, even when it's pointed out, you are so far beyond 'normal' that you really can't see it.

It also presents in a lot of different ways. It can be anxiety, hyperactivity, anger, fear....

If you think the state of physical medicine sucks, then it would terrify most people to find out how little we know about human behaviors. The worst part is that all the drugs don't necessarily work the same way on different people. In some cases the medications make it worse, or do nothing. In some cases they cause other problems, that then require yet more drugs to control.

If you are 'normal' mentally, thank whatever deity you believe in, or just consider yourself lucky.

Welcome back, Cherrytwist. Hope you can continue improving your home situation, serious illness is something no one should have to face without loved ones.

i find your comment short sighted and judgemental.

you truly don't understand mental illness.

educate yourself.

you are the reason there is a stigma against the mentally ill.
