Oye, I use to work for those bastards..
During liquidiation, gift cards are good, cc credit cards don't work.
Don't expect the employees to be helpful. I didn't help a single damn person during our liquidation. My standard response was "write down the model number, go home and look it up" I was getting cussed at every 2 minutes for over a month. It was great seeing all these good for nothing assholes actually have to figure something out for themselves for once.
"Can you help me with the printers?"
-"no"
"But I don't know which ones scan"
-"The ones that have scanner thingies on the top scan"
"You are worthless"
-"All the information is printed on the box of the printer, you just have to learn to read"
"I want to talk to your manager!!"
-"My manager is a liquidator, and they are not present at the store. If you would like to leave and go buy your printer somewhere else I would much appreciate it though"
(storms off)
So... you were basically about as helpful as Circuit City employees have been the past couple years, right?
With "helpful" employees like you, it's no wonder Circuit City is going out of business.
I'm not going to defend cc, they can suck it for all I care. But can say that I busted my ass for several years .
It's funny how customers expect every employee to know everything about everything but yet the customer is unable to educate themselves of the one single product they are looking for. If you want help with networking I'll tell you as much as I know, but If I had network+ certifications and a+certifications and finished a computer science degree do you think I would be working at circuit city?
That company is doomed based on decisions from the top. Over the course of a few years they kept lowering the starting pay for new employees. It got to the point where the only people they could hire at their new starting pay is highschool kids. I really wouldn't expect to get good service in any of the stores. It just so happens that some stores here and there still had veteran employees still around which are the only worthwile ones to talk to. Evetually they will all be gone and there will be no reason to walk into any cc if you are one of those people who are incapable of educating yourself.
Apparently hiring people like you was part of their mistake. I'm not sure if you're aware of this, but one of the jobs, if not the primary job, of a salesperson, is to EDUCATE CUSTOMERS, regardless of what you're getting paid. That's why retail stores hire salespeople. If everyone knew everything about the products retail stores sale, there wouldn't be a need for sales associates. The fact that they cut the experienced staff and hired people like you indicate that the managers of CC had the same opinion of customers that you have. Look where it got them.
(On a side note, do you expect to actually ever get a "real" job with that kind of attitude? In almost any job you'll get, customer service will be part of it. I suggest you learn to deal with it or find a career where you don't have to deal with people.)
Maybe I need to clarify some things.
First of all, what I described is not my normal work ethic.
Second, it was liquidators orders to not help people. Yes, you heard it right. They weren't trying to make friends with customers. They wanted the sales people free from customers to help watch for theft and ring out people. So according to my updated job description, I was not suppose to help anybody. If I was caught elaborately helping somebody I was to be fired instantly. The liquidators only concern was to not get stuff stolen, and to push as much product out the door as possible. Yes, that may sound counterintuitive, but look at it this way. If something gets bought that costs them $100 and it sells for $120. They make $20. But if something gets stolen that costs $100 dollars, they then have to sell 5 of them just to make up for lost profit.
There was enough traffic in the store that they didn't care if somebody didn't buy anything because they needed help. Only that things didn't get stolen because no sales people where around to stop it.
Is there anything else you can accuse me of without even knowing anything about me?
I know everything I need to know from your own description. You can certainly watch for theft, but not be a complete and utter douchebag towards people while doing it. "You just have to learn to read" - what kind of a person says that to a customer? You might THINK it... but say it to them? Come on, guy, have some class. Those "good for nothing assholes" you mention are why you had a job.
After the 70th person has walked up to you asking, "What is the price of this?" when there is a big yellow tag the size of the entire box taped to the side with the price on it you really start to get irritated. How are you suppose to respond to this? How are you not able to find the price when you had the lift up the price tag itself to look under to even see what the product was?
And I have come to the conclusion over the course of 3 years, that no matter how nice you are, 90% of customers are going to be douchebags. Somebody will ask you something, you will answer, then they will laugh in your face because they disagree.
Example:
Cus "I need a NIC"
Me- "We only have these 2 left in stock, the $9 Nextech or the $34 Linksys"
Cus "What's the difference?"
Me- "Well, they both to have the exact same specifications, I would asume that the
cheaper one has lower quality components and may be prone to problems sooner
than the Linksys. It's your choice. According to specs they are the same."
Cus (irritated somehow) "HA..hahahaha! I work in this business! They have to use the
the same protocols, they can't be any different. How did you get a job here!??
Man, you guys are dumb! I do this all the time. I know they are the same!
Do you know what I do for a living!?? hah! ?
(runs off)
me- "Good for you fuckhead.. why the fuck did you ask if you allready knew?"
Then everybody wants a 'special discount'. What the hell for? If they wanted you to buy it at a cheaper price it would be that cheaper price. Everything is allready below MSRP. Laptops are almost ALWAYS below cost. You get people yelling at you because you cant lower the price. People think it's ridiculous that we don't want to sell something for cheaper than what we bought it for. If you get a protection plan and some accessories we can then pull some money off of those items, but the POS system won't allow something to be brought below cost. If it allready is, then nothing can be done.
And then you have the scammers. Quoting bullshit prices for us to pricematch. Look it up at the place they quoted the price to be at and they don't even carry the item. Again, more yelling. If it was such a good deal, worthing yelling over, why didn't you just buy it? Because it's not real, you're just a fucking scammer.
Then their are those people who need memory for their computer/camera/mp3 player.. but don't even know what brand or model the item is. Then they get pissed because I'm not some kind of oracle that can allready know what their device uses.
To get to the point, people are assholes. It doesn't matter what you do. If you aren't stroking their dick on the way in the door then they aren't happy.
Don't get me wrong, I go above and beyond when helping customers. But if somebody is a dick, I'm a dick right back. I don't care if you feel that you are in a higher position than me because you are the customer and I am the employee. Being a dick isn't, and shouldn't ever be any part of our culture. If you allow it, then they know it works and they will do it again. If you tell them to go fuck themselves, maybe they will learn that they aren't any more important than the next. I have pulled peoples computers apart right on the floor and installed graphics cards for them while other customers where waiting on me, yelling at managers because they aren't getting any help. Then I get yelled at by a manager for helping somebody to an extreme. If I would have told the guy that he would have to install it himself at home that wouldn't be good customer service would it? I could have sent him to Firedog and made him pay $49 for the install I suppose. But I'm such a douche, I just had to help this guy.
