You know it's bad when during the last 2 visits I made, there were more employees than customers there. Looked almost funereal, except this funeral had loud, thumping kicker and Bose bass with 40 lcds and plasmas showing a green pixelated mountain.

Former Circuit City Employee Confessions

This will take some of you back a ways .

Former Employee Confession

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Employee @ Store , 0399, Lynchburg, VA & 0835, Roanoke, VA - 4 1/2 Years from 96-2000

Circuit City was the bomb back in the 90s. Where else could you make 40,000 year without a college degree selling high-end electronics.

Then came the "Divx" fiacso. Our store manager would beat it into us to push at every register transaction. Every customer was offered a divx pitch. It was going to be the bread and butter.....Costly Adventure thought up my lawyers and the entertainment groups.

Then we dumped appliances ot make room for media and toys, games, etc

Then I didnt care anymore, because I left...but a bunch of people lost their jobs that I felt really bad for. "Company Men & Women" aka Lifers. Some of which gave 12-15 years and were habitual "Presidents Club" winners.

I sat in dozens of team meetings that CC would never go to hourly.

I got a visit from "Nick the Stick" too which for those of you whom remember was the regional LP manager that cam down to do the deed and can people for firing.

Circuit city employees used to be the worst abusers though. They would win stuff on accomodation programs from employees and "RTV" it for store cost to buy other shit. Circuit city employees bought selected brands because they knew they were upgradable with the brilliant RTV programs.

~ Highlights of my career would have been taking digital pictures with the mavicas of customer furnished turds in the mens restroom. Yes we got very bored at times but hey all you had to do was sell a big screen hitachi and get payed 8-9% plus another 65 off warranties.

"Cycle Counts" - Could have done without them......

~ Favorite Speakers at CC in my Day. INI CS3007 - 6's were nice too.
~Favorite Reciever - ONK TSXV525 - Payed nicely at $35 or so a pop
~Favorite Sub - Kenwood SUb- It thumped and payed well
~Favorite TVs - Proscan - but those biotches always came back.....always sooner or later, We would get hit on the exchange "unless a no history" and the new tv would pay a hell of a lot less because they would get a sony or something usually. Anything Hitachi "Ultravision" payed very well.
~Phone activations payed respectively but was too much damn time involved. "ACE" was not the place to be nor was the 13" TV wall
~Least Favorite Speakers - Pioneer, Technics, Perhaps KLH as well.

~ Fun stuff with circuit city would be helping a customer out selecting a camcorder or 27" television or stereo reciever. You see the employees were in control the whole time. Cause their commissions were posted directly on the "fact tags." Just backwards as if that was some kind of code. Margins were on the "DPS" terminals as well so you knew if you were going to get a beating for selling something that would put your sales reports in the crapper for over a week. You better get your ass over to the monster cable interlinks and sell something to bring up that "ADV" POS you just sold. (Advertised Value) Fun Times All ---Fun Times.

The Warehouse, Delivery and Ops Crew were Elite though.

Any formor minions feel free to chime in from all around the country. I know most have moved on but thought some would enjoy these ACRONYMS>

~ Coolest Moment at Circuit City ....Training in RIchmond, VA....Close your eyes and listen to the imaging of these speakers. We are going to teach why Onkyo, HarmonKardon is better than PIO, SON, PAN, TEC, and why you will want to sell them these brands. Audio Traning PSD1 - Video Traning PSD1 -

I predict there's a going to be a LOT of posting over the next week in here with people coming in to grumble "The prices haven't changed at all" I remember I got all excited when the local CompUSA went out of business, and went to their big whiz-bang going out of business sale. Saw NOTHING in there that was even a remotely good deal.

They're not going to offload their stuff for nothing. They'll take off 5-10% maybe and the liquidators will spin the rest off to competitors or E-Bay or something.

Damn shame, BB is the only chain left in my neck of the woods, so they will have a monopoly.

CC did has some very good deals (like $5 Valve games!) but most of the stuff was meh. Service was horrible at local branch, the manager was a huge PITA in you went and did PMs!

I also have a buddy that works there, and he told me, that they already marked up some stuff back to retail price 'as ordered' tonight.

I still don't understand why they wouldn't do a liquidation sale on their (now closed) web site, and they just have people pick up at stores. That would mean more $$$ for them, and everyone wouldn't have to deal with the scum bag liquidators with the '70% off' BS they are going to do.

Funny how they didn't approach congress to get a bailout. I bet they would have gotten it to.

I think this really sucks.. but the Circuit City management need to get the blame they deserve...

The worst things Circuit City did:

1. Got rid of 'suit and tie' commission-paid employees that were actually helpful

2. Costly renovations to go from the 'dark corridor' stores to cookie-cutter stores that look like any other random store

3. Opened up a ton of new stores in the past few years... Paid for by what? Seriously.. WTF were they thinking?

4. Hired criminals for management. (The company officers.. not store management)

So tomorrow was my final day at "Circuit City" because as a customer best put it, starting tomorrow that store will no longer exist. Fortunately for me and most of my coworkers, I'll still be around until around mid-March. Right off the bat it's important to know that this was a part time job for me. I'm currently a student and was only working there to make some extra cash. It's also important to note that I have only been with CC for about 4-5 months. However regardless of my position with the store, I couldn't help but feel a bit of sadness.

The store I "currently" work in is not actually a "Circuit City". Instead it is known as "The City". These concept stores have popped up around the country and I felt were the right direction for Circuit City. I had always loathed the nearby regular Circuit City for numerous reasons (tidiness, help, organization), but these stores are different. Not only is the layout different, but the mindset is too. These stores are consistently more popular with the employees and more importantly the customers. In fact the top five grossing stores on Black Friday were all "City" stores. The mantra of The City stores was quite different. Everything was embarrassingly based around "keeping it real", a concept where coworkers (salespeople and managers alike) we're supposed to be able to freely keep each other in check while on the clock. The City was also about equality and funny terms....customers were guests, and employees were partners. I will never forget the day I met my manager and I put my hand out for a handshake. Instead of meeting my hand at the waist, he put his hand up as if to wave and asked for a high five. That about summed up the concept of The City: high fives.

The real reason I enjoyed working at The City was because it gave Circuit City hope. It made me, as well as other customers, believe this organization had hope. We had raving customer service reviews and people would often come in to get help from their specific favorite employee. However we were all wrong about Circuit City...we were lied to.

The concept of exceptional customer satisfaction was flawed. As employees we were required to hand out these small 3X3 inch cards stating our "promises" to the customers. The mentioned price matching, free shipping, and firedog installs. However they were extremely frustrating to hand out. Employees were watched like hawks to see if the cards were handed out and the days suddenly became less about selling and more about handing out these ridiculous cars. You can imagine how annoyed people would get hearing about the cards all day long and constantly being bombarded by every employee in the store discussing the same thing. This was at the time Circuit City started the "One Price Promise", which was in fact a great idea: make the in-store and online prices the same. Most employees saw a lot of hope for the company with this policy especially because of Best Buy's problems with this in the past. However at the same time the company closed 155 stores. Now many of us knew this was coming....what we didn't know was when. This is when my opinion on Circuit City drastically changed. One would think most of the stores would receive some type of preparation for the closings, or at least a personal word from company HR. Instead on that faithful Sunday, 155 managers checked their emails and read their fates to their crews. No warning, no visits from HR, no personal messages....emails. How could a company change the lives of so many people through an electronic mass message? We had been told for weeks that the company was about to do fine, and they lied through their teeth. The situation was simply poorly and distastefully executed.

Today that same fate was realized for the remaining employees of all Circuit City. When Circuit City closed the stores last time, all stores were having an employee meeting. This time the formality was skipped and most of us heard simply through the TV. 34,000 people will lose their job in the next couple months and most of them won't have anywhere to go. Circuit City is already denying any paid time off used past today (1/16), and has already shipped out liquidators to all stores. Overnight the second largest electronics retailer in the US vanished and as of tonight it no longer exists.

However in retrospect, perhaps the worst bash to Circuit City is from the customer. For the past 4 months since Circuit City filed for Chapter 11 the store has been battered and bruised. As an employee I have been called a liar, stupid, useless, insignificant, and moronic not because of my product knowledge, but because of the store's policies. Too many times has a news savvy customer come in and told what the price should be because of the bankruptcy issue. Let me put this out there: I do not receive commission. I understand that you want a good price, however I can not control the prices. I honestly don't care if you won't buy a product from the store because you are asking for 50% off. Customers need to be realistic. Customers also need to realize we are human too. All of us in this world are consumers, but not all of us are distributors. If you buy from us I'll be glad for your commitment to the store. However if you decide not to, I will not care. The customer needs to understand that the employee is not there to chauffeur you, he/she is just a convenient means to get information on your product and help you with your selection. If you hate Circuit City, fine...just don't hate the people that are trying to earn some type of living there.

Regardless of how you feel, it's the end of an era and there's no turning back for Circuit City anymore. I can only hope that the consumer has good thoughts of Circuit City when it dies. Although employees don't care too much whether you buy from us or not, we do want to help you out. I can only hope that during the last somber few weeks at the stores, the customers will help us back.

RIP Circuit City. You will be missed.

ps...sorry for any spelling/grammar mistakes....im tired!

It was an old-school thinking organization and was always two steps behind everyone else. Their pricing was never all that great on the things that mattered, and their focus on pushing protection plans was all too obvious. I used to work for them part-time and full-time through college, and I couldn't get away from them quickly enough. Their bankruptcy was no surprise, and their going out of business comes as no shock either.

That being said, a lower amount of competition sucks. I wish they could have gotten their act together and rebounded, so that we, the consumers would ultimately win. I guess we won't.

So here's a question. What if you pre-ordered a game online, with a "free $10 gift card" but they actually charged you for the gift card upfront and canceled your pre-order... What are the chances of getting a refund for the unused gift card now, or do I seriously have to find something to use this on before they go under? It's not even a physical card by the way, it's just an electronic code delivered by e-mail, and from what I hear their website is going down after this weekend?

EDIT: Or their website apparently is already closed..

Thanks for that, it was a good read. However, if someone called me a liar, stupid, useless, insignificant and moronic, I probably would have "kept it real" in the spirit of The City and delivered a falcon punch.

People are so damn tacky today and they have no class but nobody should treat sales people like that.

I used to work at Circuit City in 1998 selling cd's and movies when I was a senior in High School (Boy do I feel old) and it was a pretty good part time job. Back then, I remember the salesmen making pretty good money at the time. Some guy was making $60k a year selling tv's. Then the store went hourly and they lost all their knowledgable salesmen because who wants to stick around and make $8 hour when you were making $25 hour? When you lose that edge, then people will go to best buy because their layout was nicer and they seemed to have cooler things for sale. I don't really care anymore because amazon.com is the truth.

Wow, I expected nothing great but this place seems unaware of the news; prices are unchanged. I knew it was a bad sign seeing all the people walking back to their cars without anything.

I worked at CC from 2003-2004. I'll miss CC

I have a bunch of friends who still work there, unfortunately there's not many other places for them to go. BB was on a hiring freeze and all the old Sound Advice employees got scooped up by CC.

Its a sad day, not only for all the 34,000 employees, but less competition means BB doesn't have to be as competitive with their pricing. Price matching (at least in this area) is basically dead.
