Goodbye, Nibbles

I put my dog to sleep today. Nothing was really wrong with her, she was just getting old and had arthritis (it wasnt my decision to put her down). She was a dachshund wiener dog.

We named her nibbles because she used to chew on our socks.

I stayed in the room while they did it. She struggled with the vet up until they got her with the needle. She just started slipping away. The last thing she did was look over at my sister.

To the OP, as a dog lover, I'm sorry for your loss. My first dog was on her last legs at the age of 14 when I was away at college -- my mom called to say that she was getting very weak and breathing erratically. She held on long enough for me to make it home and died in my arms when I got there

Still makes me tear up thinking about it.

I know it's a different species and all, but I recently put my 10yr old cat down, he ended up with liver cancer. It was incredibly sad, and arguably the hardest decision I've had to make thus far in my 28 years here.

Condolences. Losing a pet = Losing a family member.

I know how you feel, I've had to make that decision a few times in my life, its one of the hardest things I've had to do.
When I had to pts my childhood dog my wise uncle told me "don't be sad your dog is gone, be glad for the good times and good memories".

the average dog is a better person than most people.

18 years, wow. I also have a black and tan dachshund. I hope he lives that long. Sorry to hear that the decision was made to put her down if she was still doing okay.

One of my dogs is getting there but as long as her pain can be managed(she also has arthritis), she can snooze away on the couch and get plenty of rubs on the head.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
