I'm not overly concerned with graphics because that's never what Nintendo has been about...it's more of cartoony graphics with really fun gameplay. I do think they will be passed by Android in no time, GPU-wise, but if they can keep the AAA titles rolling out, they'll survive. They at least look like they have an awful lot of partners based on the graphical chart posted earlier in this thread. But again, they need to keep the gravy flowing...finance developers & create a release schedule so there's one huge, awesome, new, must-have game that comes out every single month for the next two years, one that keeps everyone talking about it & the system itself.

5 years later:

The Switch is now Nintendo's best-selling home console ever

Over 100 million units sold! I have 2 myself at this point (his & hers). I think there are 2 key reasons Android didn't win out:

1. Unlike Apple, Android is extremely scattered. There's no act to get together because there's no central Steve Jobs + Johnny Ives voice to create a unified thread to follow. There's no industry cohesion whatsoever for hardware, software, updates, performance specs, etc. That's not to say there isn't a fantastic market available, but it's "design by committee" like the Pontiac Aztek:

2. Convenience is king. The Switch is a screen, detachable controllers, and dock...DONE! Any little kid can learn how to play it immediately. No Android nonsense or having to figure out aftermarket controllers or anything!

BOTW, Smash, Odyssey, Kart, etc. are all super fantastic games, plus more here:

The one Android platform that has taken off is Meta/FB's Quest lineup. The second-gen standalone VR unit just crossed 10 million units shipped:

Supposedly BOTW2 is out sometime this year & possibly Odyssey 2 in a year or two!

So wonder what we see in the forty minute Nintendo Direct tomorrow. Kirby and Batman Arkham Collection seem like obvious things to expect but I hope we see BOTW 2 getting released 1H 2022 (since this Direct is supposed to focus on 1H 2022 games). Though a Xenoblade Chronicles 3 would be awesome too, especially if it's coming in the next 4 months. Xenoblade 2 has to be one of the most underrated RPG I have played.

I'll be shocked if we get BOTW2 first half of 2022. That would be a pretty big surprise. I'm guessing the biggest news will be Splatoon being released Q2 of this year and then some info about Amiibos.

Pretty awesome Nintendo Direct today. Can't wait for Xenoblade 3 in September, and excited about the new Getsufumaden coming out today too. Though the highlight of it for me was seeing 13 Sentinels coming out in April (only on the Japanese Nintendo Direct though, so prob JP only for a while).

Also surprised to see Mother 1 with an official English translation, must mean the Mother 3 localization Earthbound fans have been dying for forever is right around the corner.

Splatoon 3 release date being a little more targeted and then the MK8D DLC courses was all I really cared about. Kirby looks good though but already knew about it.

If they aren't working on a new MK game, then putting out 48 new tracks for $25 is a hell of a deal. The engine in MK8D is fun so I'm all for it.

And Switch Sports looks god awful lol. Especially when they did their little demo.

The first one was available in the US on the Wii U virtual console. Nintendo has said in the past they aren't going to localize 3 because of the plot.

I'm sure you can find an fan translated rom if you look hard enough.

Nah would rather play it raw. Know just enough Japanese to make playing not too difficult RPG like old school Super Famicom Dragon Quest games doable. As long as it's not full kana like the Famicom Dragon Quest games, not having kanji makes reading a nightmare at my level.

There's a race of trannies called the Mapysies (sp) in the game. They are important enough to the story that censoring it might be difficult.

Why they would even have to think about censoring a game is beyond me. They can put just about anything in live TV

Finished Luigi's Mansion 3 with my son this morning. I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised by the game. I only played part 1 at Gamecube launch and it was super repetitive and got boring quick, but it was the only "Mario" game to play. This one was just fun and I played the whole game co-op with my 6 year old. It is a perfect game to play co-op because the 2nd player is a character that you'd otherwise control. It was about 11-12 hours total and just a fun game.

Buddy came over tonight and brought his XSX with Gamepass and saw a few games that are also on Switch.

Infermax - played like 15 mins and stopped cause I'll eventually buy it. Nice retro 8bit game like Castlevania that is tough. I'll wait till it's on sale for like $10 or so probably.

Limbo - had never heard of this game and played like 10 mins then stopped cause I wanted to play through it. Turns out it's on sale for $2 on Switch (normally $10) then I saw it has a sequel called Inside that was also on sale for $2 (normally $20) so I grabbed em both. I'll probably play through them on my flights in April.

Limbo is a chill game that I picked up for like...maybe also $2 on steam about 7 years ago for ...also exactly coast-to-coast plane trips on a laptop.

Good call.

Spiritual successor or whatever.
Maybe? I've seen it described that way, but I tend to think of spiritual successors as games from a different developer doing their take on a game/series (like Mighty Number 9/Mega Man).

They're both worth playing, and I look forward to the game they've been working on for the last 6 years (speaking of which, Inside was released 6 years after Limbo, so the time might be getting close).

New Kirby game is pretty fun. It's pretty easy like most Kirby games but it's just fun Nintendo platforming with the expected polish/charm.
