I could play through BotW again and thoroughly enjoy it. I'm not particularly worried about Nintendo having a killer app at launch because they'll have plenty of great games over the life of the console that I can't get on PC.
Tbh my playthrough of BOTW was on PC, through Cemu since it looked and ran way better than on a real Switch. I wouldn't do it now because of shader compilation frame drops but back in 2018 when I played it on Cemu people used to share their shaders so never had to deal with shader compilation when doing a 200 hr playthrough of BOTW.

I'm probably like 10 hours into the new Zelda game and I gotta say I am really enjoying it. I just finished the large rift level after the first 2 dungeons.

The whole echo thing though is a bit gimmicky when it comes to combat and stuff. The game is designed around that so you aren't doing it too often and you can just bypass many enemies when walking around Hyrule. There are a lot more puzzle elements though than a "standard" Zelda game, which has a lot of them too.

My only complaint would be the framerate. It dips quite often for what seems like no reason. Like when you are just walking around Hyrule with not much going on, you will notice it dip slightly for a second. It's not game breaking by any means, just annoying.

Overall though I am really enjoying it.

I am officially done buying new Switch titles until the new one is announced and we hear if backwards compatibility is on the menu and if it is it enhances the performance of older titles at all.

We just got Super Mario RPG is is gorgeous but I am ready for the performance floor for modern consoles to rise.

I am glad to hear it’s fun though - my son has to finish WiiU twilight princess and 3Ds majoras mask before I buy another Zelda title as well. He doesn’t realize how nice he has it

Considering they're using Nvidia again for the SoC, it should definitely be capable of backwards compatibility. If they get some custom stuff from
Nvidia to add in the more recent DLSS feature set, there's no reason it shouldn't be able to upscale older titles to higher resolutions without looking utterly terrible.

Right? Seems reasonable. I am just hoping that the CPU and memory bandwidth advancements are also allowed to add to the mix, helping games to target either a steady 30 or 60 fps.

I've still got Astral Chain - which runs notably better on newer switches with their modest bandwidth uplift, I have a launch unit - and I am hoping I can finish it with a more stable framerate, and maybe even entertaining playing Bayo 3.

Sounds like Links Awakening. Wonder if OC helps at all. Just OCing my memory to 1600MHz made an enormous difference in Tears of the Kingdom to keep a steady 30 fps most of the time when at stock speeds the framerate dropped constantly.

I thought they ran everything at the same speeds. My oldschool Erista Switch could mostly lock to 30 fps with a memory clock boost to 1600 MHz in Tears of the Kingdom while the Mariko and later still got the same frame drops as Erista at stock.

I recently picked up Red Dead Redemption on the Switch and I am loving it all over again. Was such a great game on the PS3. Looks and plays great on the switch.

How much is the look going to change? The form factor of the Switch is already about as good as it can get. Companies making stupid changes for the sake of changes is why the latest generation controllers for most consoles aren't as good as they used to be. Ditto for the console designs as well. Sony could have kept the same look for the PS5, but no they needed something new and different and it's ugly in new and different ways.

The controllers being terrible this gen is likely more for planned obsolescence than anything else. E.g. in 40 years of gaming I have never had a controller develop stick drift the way the DualSense does, and the only worse first party controller I have ever used was the one that came with the Atari 5200 (not counting gimmicks like the Power Glove).

I mean based on history, there has never been a console who's successor looks physically identical to the previous one, so I would put my money on that just being a picture of the current Switch.

I agree.

I hope if they learned even one thing from the Wii U is that they need to make this distinctive in terms of naming and something about the form factor giving it a clear break from the Switch. I feel like they did OK with this on the 3DS but then the small refreshes of that were terrible.

If they call this the "New Switch" it will be so epic.

Super Switch.

It worked for the NES/SNES.
