I've watched people play it, and the battles look pretty... meh to me. It's what's commonly called an SRPG or Strategy RPG. Games like this usually have battles that take place on a grid, but also one that's normally a bit larger than what you see in South Park. (South Park is something like a 4x12 horizontal grid.) The genre kinda got pushed with the Ogre Battle series on the Super Nintendo, which culminated in the Tactics Ogre game. The director of that game worked with Squaresoft to develop Final Fantasy Tactics, which is a rather beloved non-main entry into the series. (Although, the world used in Tactics was the same as the one in Final Fantasy XII.) My biggest complaint about the South Park game is just the size of the grid... it seems so limiting when it comes to tactics, but beyond that, it looks fine.
Nintendo's "Wars" and "Fire Emblem" series predate Ogre Tactics, though they didn't see release outside of Japan until the GBA.

The grid sizes in SP vary on a per battle basis, same with how many people are in your party and how many you fight. The battles are however funny as shit for the most part with all the shit talking going on. But I'm definitely not playing this game for strategic battles. I just pretty much pick the most powerful attack and use it. I just want to get battles over for the most part.

Ugh I should have never gotten my fiancée Stardew Valley. I don't think I'm gonna have access to the Switch when Mario Odyssey comes out. She's addicted to it. She's been playing it non stop since it got released on the Switch.

This is why you keep her in the kitchen and reinforce the notion that only men play video games because they are stupid.

Wait..is saying something like that allowed post Harvey?

Oh, if anyone wants Mario, Best Buy is offering an additional $10 back in rewards in addition to Gamers Club Unlocked.

Sounds like a good excuse to pick up a shiny, new Mario Odyssey Switch bundle this Friday.

I'm debating holding off starting Mario Galaxy for a little bit so I can finish South Park and possibly play the first one, and possibly Alien Isolation, and then still have some new stuff to play in Mario on my flight to Aruba at the end of November. I don't think I'll be able to do that though. Pretty sure I'm going to play that shit Friday night a lot though.

Mario Odyssey getting awesome reviews. Biggest gripes I've been reading is about the motion controls and how's they suck and are required to get many of the collectible moons that you need to progress. Easiest with Joycons separate in each hand, not as easy with Pro Controller, and really suck in portable mode.

That is really fucking retarded that they made some stuff motion control required. That was by far the worst part about Zelda and probably the only thing I just hated about that game. I'm sure it will be the same with Mario Odyssey.

I'm not going to bother reading reviews or anything, no need. I know it's going to be great and don't want anything spoiled. The trailers already spoiled quite a bit as far as the worlds go so I stopped watching those too.

I'm watching a guy on Twitch play Odyssey. It looks okay, but he's saying the controls aren't very tight. I don't know, if they come strong with a few more good titles, I could see picking it up if I have the time.

I picked my copy up at Best Buy, and they had a multi-page sheet full of pick-ups. There were a few other people ahead of me picking it up, so I get the feeling that it will sell fairly well. (Best Buy was also giving $10 back in certificates in addition to the GCU discount, which helps.)

Just got home and my son just went to sleep so I have like 2 hours free.

But Amazon hasn't delivered it yet

Guess that means some South Park for a while.

Got my game and coin. Can't believe BB gave me a $10 promo on a future purchase in addition to selling it for $46 with Gamer's Club. As I'll unquestionably use it, it's like getting a first party Nintendo title unlikely to go down in value for $36. And with a Mario coin on top! I'm LOVING it so far. It's so bright and colorful I could dare say it would cure my depression if such a thing were possible.

The controls are a little floaty compared to some games I’ve played lately but to be honest Mario has always been floaty even the 2D games IMO. They seem better than Galaxy’s controls were though.

Just played Mario for like 30 minutes, gonna play for a couple hours once I put my son to sleep.

Something about the controls does feel a bit off in this game. I wouldn't call it floaty as someone above did, but it feels a bit too loose or something. So far it's not like hindering the gameplay or anything, it just is different.

Do you think it’s some type of input lag? I don’t know how else to describe it so I called it floaty. It’s like I can’t be ultra precise. Really my ultimate gripe is pulling off some of the moves. Some require multiple buttons pressed in at the same time and correct timing. It’s a lot to deal with when you are trying to not go down a pitfall or avoid some type of trap or enemy.

I’ve also read that if you want to collect all the moons some of the platforming puzzles require the motion controls because certain moves can only be performed with them. I don’t really like that they did that. They make it optional but at the same time it’s really not because certain cappy moves are limited to motion controls. I don’t think I’ll be hunting down all the moons anyway though.

I read that getting all the moons you get special endgame stuff. Don't want to spoil it for people though so don't want to say what it is.

Nah definitely not input lag, it's like too sensitive or something though I feel like. Like when trying to turn and aim and what not, it feels like it over turns all the time, so maybe that is why it feels "loose" to me. I'll see if there is sensitivity settings though.

Again, nothing ground breaking, just doesn't quite feel as tight as previous games to me.

Biggest game the Switch has had yet, and we're still just talking about in the generic switch thread?

I'm finding some input lag or something similar, and I would certainly call it floaty. Though I also can blame a bit of it on the joycons. For some reason they don't seem to have as solid of a connection as other controllers I've used, and my right one hasn't registered button presses a few times leading to "cheap" deaths.

Also, how does the biggest game for the Swith not get its own thread? We're still talking about all these new releases in the generic Switch thread

Make the thread then that may be a good idea.

After playing for like 2 hours, this game is fucking fantastic. The controls seem fine to me now. I changed the camera to be "normal" from "low" and that seemed to improve something for me. I dunno but now it feels pretty good. Could be I'm also just used to it now.

The controls do take some getting used to. I absolutely hate the motion controls. I wish they would patch them out. I don't like them at all.

I've been playing for about two hours and yes, it's freaking awesome so far. This game is so fun and makes your face smile so much even in the short time I've been playing it.

So it's Zelda and Mario Odyssey for games of the year

Agree that the controls seem to lag a little, but the biggest downside are the motion controls. I don't find play with the Joycons pleasurable at all. They are probably some of the worse controllers I've used lately and much prefer the Pro controller. The forced gimmick mechanic whether it be the Joycons, Wii U tablet, PS touch pad or Kinect take away from a lot of good games and add little value.

I agree and it's unfortunate. The pro controller isn't exactly the best way to handle the game but it's the best way to control the switch. Nintendo recommends using the dual joycons detached from the system but I can't enjoy it like that the same. It's not very relaxing to play for me if I do that, which I did try.

Started a new thread to discuss the game. I'll contact a moderator and see if they would be able to move the posts from here to there.
