What better way to squeeze $70 more out of Nintendo fans than to not let them use their $50 Wii U controller on the Switch?

Nope but special snowflakes now a days all have an entitlement mentality where they think they deserve everything for free.

So that means playing older games on the new console applies here as well?

Personally when I buy a new console I do not care or even want the old console stuff on it. Accessories like controllers are usually redesigned anyway.

Got my Odyssey edition Switch in, WHOOHOO! Unfortunately I've been on the road for awhile now, so haven't been home to play with it Hoping to get back home tonight to unbox it & start the setup! Also found a local buyer for my Wii U, woot woot!

On a tangent, they announced a Gamecube controller adapter...I'm curious if they're going to allow you to use two of those, like for 8-way Smash. It looks like MK8 Deluxe lets you play with up to 12 players on a LAN, although I don't know all of the exact details yet...the FAQ shows a wired Ethernet setup with 12 Switches:

http://en-americas-support.nintendo...e-the-lan-play-feature-of-mario-kart-8-deluxe

If wonder if you could do like a three-Switch setup (with 4-way split-screen) via Wi-fi for 12-person gaming. That'd be pretty intense!

Backwards compatibility for games definitely is nice when possible. It means that new devices already have a library of games to play for new buyers. I've gotten quite a bit of mileage out of my 3DS's backwards compatibility with the DS, for example. But it's not reasonable to demand it as if it should be expected. Differences in cartridge/disc media can make direct compatibility impossible. Architectural differences can make it unfeasible to emulate the past hardware - Microsoft managed to build a 360 emulator for the XB1, but I bet there's no way Sony is getting a Cell emulator working on the PS4's x86 CPU. The workaround to this is to physically include the past system's chips in the new system so it can run games natively - early model PS3s had PS2 chips, and the Wii U had Wii chips, IIRC. But the downside of this is it adds to the cost of the system, which has to get passed on to the consumer. If I already have a PS3, do I want to pay extra for its chips in a PS4? Not really, no.

So. Backwards compatibility. Nice when it's there, but not a sign of console designer laziness or greed when it's not. And it's not very fair to single out Nintendo for lacking controller back compat when that's how it's always been done, by all console makers.

Makes sense for me them as most of the their games wouldn't run well on the Switch at all. Fifa is an entirely different engine on Switch than any other system. No way it's running Battlefield or Star Wars Batllefront.
They could try making original games for the Switch. It's the only portable console on the market and the designated successor to the Nintendo 3DS; you know this thing is going to sell software like nobody's business.

How the publisher behind games like Henry Hatsworth can't figure out how to make money on the Switch is beyond me...

I would sacrifice my finest ox to get the Mass Effect trilogy on the Switch...
I just want that on any modern system. Unfortunately with how storage is handled on the Switch, I don't think we will be getting games that huge for a while.

Just over a year after posting this thread, I finally got my Switch! Thoughts:

1. I waited for the Special Edition Mario Odyssey edition with red controllers, red tote bag, and digital download code for Odyssey. $379 from Gamestop...glad I waited for the price to come down! Sold the Wii U locally & also bought Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the Switch, so we have a couple games to start out with. Kept my original Wii tho, as we still really like the Motion Plus controllers & some of the older games.

2. I had no idea how SMALL this was! It's hardly bigger than an iPhone 7 Plus! Dang! The size actually works out nicely for portable gaming, however, especially with the JoyCons attached on each side, and is small enough for kids to use pretty easily.

3. I'll probably pick up Zelda on sale on Black Friday. SnipperClips looks fun. Still poking through the games list & gameplay videos.

4. I'd like to get a Pro controller, but dang, $70 each! Although reviews are good (well-built, good battery life, etc.). We are hardcore Mario Kart players, so eventually I'll need 4 controllers...I'll have to pick up one Pro controller to compare it to the JoyCons & then decide which route we want to go.

5. Already made two hardware mistakes. I put the black slim cap on the side of the second JoyCon upside-down & got it stuck. Fortunately the little lever let me pop it off. Derp. I also popped the stand leg on the tablet & it immediately snapped off. I was able to get it back in. Doesn't seem like it articulates. It does fit perfectly on my Anker multi-angle phone/tablet stand, however:

https://www.amazon.com/Anker-Portable-Multi-Angle-Smartphones-Compatible/dp/B00N1VDCGO

6. With how much everyone was initially complaining about the power specs vs. graphics, I am blown away with how big the levels are & how good the graphics are (for Nintendo). Odyssey definitely feels like a next-level Mario 64 game!

7. Looks fine on a 4K TV. I have a budget Hitachi 65" 4K LED Roku TV (Sam's Club special, highly recommend it!) and it does not look awful - it actually looks a lot better than I was expecting! Mario Kart 8 Deluxe adds 1080p mode (apparently the Wii U version was 720p max) & is a lot easier to see clearly.

8. The JoyCon controllers are small, but usable. Great for kids & not bad at all for adult-sized hands. Horizontal individual wireless control on Mario Kart is a little bit of a challenge, but not bad, especially with auto-acceleration enabled. Tilt sensing is excellent for turning & the joystick is very responsive as well.

9. The touchscreen & clarity on the tablet are both excellent. I was never really happy with the Wii U's primary hardware controller system. That, plus the fact that you're not range-limited for handheld use on the Switch is really nice.

10. Overall, very happy with the system & setup, especially for the price (now that it's not like $600 for a combo kit anymore, haha). I was pretty skeptical about the design at the initial announcement, but now that I've gotten a hands-on, I think it's a great concept all around. Really good improvement over the Wii U.

What's the deal with storage, does it not roll over or something? We keep running out of space on our aging iPad Mini from Minecraft...I was thinking about getting Minecraft for the Switch & a 200gb MicroSD card for Christmas to avoid space issues, unless that's not the way it works...

Switch has the potential to sell multiple units and duplicate games to one household. I have a Switch with Zelda and Mario. I purchased second Switch for my daughter's Christmas present. She's getting her own copy of Zelda with the system. I'm sure there are many more households like ours.

I don't, it's not priced like the DS for that.

I too have a budget 65" 4k tv from Sam's (A Vizio e65e1 though, not a Hitachi) and I as well am blown away by how good Mario looks considering it isn't even outputting in 1080p. I guess scaling has come a long way, eh?

Welcome to the bandwagon, friend!

I play Mario on a 120" screen and it looks fantastic still. I actually think the game looks better on the big screen than in portable mode. Other games like Zelda and Mario Kart it is the opposite for me. I don't know what it is about Mario but it looks better on big screen.

It's possible your projector is of higher quality than the LCD Nintendo put in the Switch.

It's just that the 32 GB internal storage is rather paltry for a modern portable device, and a lot of third party games are requiring significant additional downloads - I'm talking around 10 and 20 GB - even if you have the physical game cartridge. So a sizable micro SD card, upwards of 128 GB, is basically a required additional purchase if you plan on playing large third party games on the Switch. Doubly so if, like me, you prefer to just download the entire game rather than worry about keeping track of cartridges.

Glad you're enjoying the Switch! Welcome to the club.

The higher price will be a deterrent to some households getting multiple Switches, for sure, but I'm sure there will be a significant amount of fairly well-off households that do. It still holds the appeal of family members each wanting one for themselves to carry around and personalize, while there's really no point in getting multiple Xboxes or Playstations.

I'm not sure what his comment was about... But the SD card extends the storage to allow games to be loaded to it. You can decide where to put games manually if you want, but it'll also install games on the SD card automatically after you install it without any manual intervention. That card will be tied to the console though, so in the future if you think you may end up with multiple Switches, you can't swap cards between the switches.

Ehh there's jaggies everywhere. I wish the Switch was more powerful for games like Mario or Zelda. Mario is an awesome game, #2 in the year for me after Zelda but there's tons of jaggies everywhere and draw distance sucks which is kind of important when looking for moons and level coins. Sure you don't notice it while in the midst of jumping around everywhere but it would look so much more beautiful in higher resolution. Zelda was in definite need of more power as well with how much slowdown in that game.
