I'm pretty sure the only reason is because it is the only way to play Nintendo brand games. If you could buy Zelda or Mario on PS4, PC, or X1, I'm pretty sure the majority of people wouldn't even consider a Switch.

Eh, I am actually really really excited about a new high-end portable gaming machine. The Vita's memory card situation makes it REALLY unappealing, and I have wasted $130+ on different Bluetooth controllers for tablets and phones to try and get a decent mobile gaming experience in failure. I am super pumped about playing the Switch on work trips I frequently have to take.

The Switch is everything I wanted a 3DS replacement to be- I am sick of the top-heavy low resolution screen setup of the whole DS line. If Nintendo would have made just a little weaker PS4 clone with a twist Wii U style I wouldn't even consider it Mario or not for the same reasons I didn't buy a Wii U. I don't even think Mario on a PS4/PC is possible (their stubborn asses would go all iOS or shut it down first), so I am happy the Wii U replacement is also the 3DS replacement so the portable I would have bought from any company that made it will also have every new Nintendo game in say three years. That is a slam dunk for me.

I do wish it had more storage and a real D pad instead of prioritizing sharing two half assed game pads, but I for one am excited that Nintendo has abandoned the home console market to make the ultimate portable (rather than the other way around) because it fits into my adult life better.

I don't think I am the only one, I bring up my Switch fandom way more than I should around people IRL and friends I grew up with (I am 35) who don't game anymore due to kids and other time commitments could easily think how the Switch could fit in THEIR lives ("I can play Mario 64 2 at soccer practice!"). I think this thing could be the pied piper for lapsed adult gamers. We will see I guess.

I just think no adult with a smartphone and/or tablet is hurting for entertainment enough to spend over $300.

Yeah, adults who are excited about a "hand held" (and I put that in quotes because they are not advertising this as a handheld but a home console that is portable) I would have to say are in the vast minority.

Well there is the nation of Japan. Many Japanese own over $300 worth of 3DS models alone.

Outside of that though you may be right. The 3DS was popular in the West for being a little children's toy and the Switch is much more expensive. I can honestly see it going either way and I can see the Switch not being a huge success for Nintendo if they can't give enough value to parents and lapsed gamers. Personally just getting Nintendo games and decent indies will make it worthwhile for me, but the Switch will have a hard time replicating the success of the 3DS at a higher price if they can't connect to 30 something adults. They are too conservative with not saying its a 3DS successor even though that is obvious, and they are trying too hard to directly replicate the Wii's success with 1 2 Switch. Add in some online missteps and I can see the obvious potential for failure.

Nintendo is trying to avoid that failure by connecting to a mainstream casual audience via the Superbowl commercial and by using John Cena in marketing, but who knows if it will work. I just think anyone who feels they 100% know it will fail because it doesn't meet hardcore gamer standards is either being intellectually dishonest about its value offering (one Nintendo console to rule them all) or they have a complete mental block about what happened with the Wii. Note I am not saying it will be as successful as the Wii, I am just saying the casual audience is huge and unpredictable sometimes. The Pokemon Go phenomenon (and the massive sales boost it gave to the 3DS) is another good example. Time will tell.

So far the Switch marketing effort is having a positive effect on social media:

Nintendo was the only console brand that generated substantial buzz around its TV ads in the last 30 days — and generate buzz, it did. It captured nearly half of the gaming industry’s digital share of voice (iSpot measures actions across Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and all major search engines)

http://venturebeat.com/2017/02/19/nintendo-dominated-super-bowl-gaming-buzz/

We will see if that social media hype leads to Christmas sales.

In other news the launch game list got even more barren when it was announced Binding of Isaac won't be there day one. That made me cancel my pre-order, as half the value was something else to play day 1 besides Zelda and a 1 2 Switch I refuse to buy. I am Setsuna probably gets that $40 instead.

I'm catching up on everything today. I'm disappointed about the Zelda DLC. Every aspect of it. A digital shirt to remove you from the immersion? A hard mode sounds great, but should be part of the main game. Zelda has already become a hand-holding experience since Navi. Maybe if the DLC violently killed this game's Navi and made the game Dark Souls hard, or God-forbid "Nintendo Hard", it might redeem itself. Might have to wait a few years for them to release a complete edition. That'll be lame. Almost makes me want to skip the whole console. Nintendo's BS the past couple of years forced me to skip the Wii U, so I haven't had any decent multiplayer games to play with company. Hoping the Switch will fix that. I don't have any desire for online gaming on console; I get enough of that on PC. But Nintendo knows we want Zelda and knows we're willing to pay for it. Makes me sick.

You can buy a Micro USB to USB (I've also seen the same for iphone stuff to USB) cables online for $5 and just plug in a wired 360 controller. With everything, it costs about $30 to turn any phone or tablet into a mobile game station and if you want to toss in some sort of pre-made stand, your total still won't exceed $40.

Yea the DLC is dumb. Hard mode should definitely be included free and the shirt is retarded. The only story mode part comes out late this year which is what everyone only really cares to pay for.

I have a serious question about the switch. My 7 year old son has been asking me for one and right now I am in the clear because I can't get hold of one. But he does not like Zelda(too mature for him) and I don't let him play Splatoon since it's online only. He loves MK8 but he already has it on the wiiu. He loves other Mario games but I don't think the switch has any coming out anytime soon. Once the switch becomes widely available, what would my excuse be? It's a 7 year old so reasoning and logic don't usually work so well with them.

Tell him it's sold out which is basically is. Mario isn't expected to be coming out until this Holiday season anyways.

A side note about splatoon, there is absolutely zero verbal or written communication with other people online. They may as well be considered AI bots with better programming.

I didn't bother researching the extent of online interaction. I just stopped any online or eShop access on his username.

What's wrong with just telling him no?

You have kids? I tell mine no a lot but there are still times when they wear you down, it isn't worth putting up a fight, or you need something done they can do. Raising kids is pretty damn easy but it never, ever, ever, ever stops. There are no breaks. There are no sick days. And as tornadog said "It's a 7 year old so reasoning and logic don't usually work so well with them."

Welp I ordered a 200GB microSD card for the Switch. Today Amazon has a special promo code for $8.62 discount on all orders over $50 so I used it on that and made the micro SD card $61 or of course you can use it on a smaller capacity card and just get something else to make it over $50

Promo code: BIGTHANKS

Thank you for the tip. I used it to buy a $50 eShop card. Discounted Snipperclips here I come!

Why do you have to reason with a 7 year old? Does he not respect you enough to take no as an answer?

Yea I read about the Joycon problems. It is better be able to be fixed with an update.

No VC, I think most of us were expecting no VC at launch because if they would have had it ready for launch, they would have said so on their presentation.

It's clear, and from many of the prereviews, they are saying the same, there is a lot that is not ready for launch and should have spent more time on it. It's weird, it didn't seem like they were in a hurry to kill off the WiiU. No online at launch either. A lot of basic stuff we have to wait for

As mentioned, its sold out for now. There is no Mario game until the fall and Mario Kart 8 Switch Edition is out April 28th. No reason to buy it until new Mario comes out.

Also reading from multiple outlets that the stock Joycons isn't the best way to play. The stick placement on the right Joycon, I keep hearing since it's directly blown the buttons, feels off since we are so used to the stick being offset. Also the sticks on the the Pro Controller are different as well making it better for extended and more hard-core players. I'm definitely glad I pre-ordered a Pro controller.

Anyone checked out the resale value on these yet? I'm wondering if it's worth it to ebay my preorder and just change shipping address on my Amazon order.

Anyone have experience having Amazon directly ship something you sold the preorder of on Ebay?

I wouldn't try to sell it, Nintendo held back a bunch of pre-orders so you can walk into stores and get it on launch day.

Yeah a quick look at ebay shows them going for like $380 - $400. Not worth the effort. I'll just cancel it.
