Don't know what the difference is, but when I got rid of my old 1080i RPTV and switched to my 1080P LCD, the HDMI cable I was using previously didn't work with it. Swapped in one of the others I had, and it worked fine.

1080p uses a bit more bandwidth. Early hdmi cables could only handle so much and as standards change so does the requirements.

When you try passing 4k 10bit Color HDR at 60hz you may. That’s why I had to buy new cables. Monoprice has premium certified cables which are tested to meet the full specs. This is especially important for runs 10+ feet.

Yeah, I had a hell of a time trying to find a long cable that would work with my TV's Enhanced Mode (UHD + HDR + YCbCr of 4:2:2 or higher). I bought some of the best cables I could find, and none of them were capable of running to a wall plate and then having only five feet of extra cables (two cables, 2-foot and 3-foot, which were also high-end cables). I ended up buying an active HDMI cable from Monoprice that supports HDR. It's thin enough that having to run it directly from the receiver, into the wall and to the TV won't be a problem. My other nice, passive cables are just far too thick for that... especially since the cable has to wrap behind my TV's mount!

nakedfrog, there are transmission quality differences, and depending on how much bandwidth is need (1080p obviously called for a higher data rate) as well as the quality of the electronics that handle the hdmi transmission, cables that work in one situation may not work in another. As mentioned above you, 10bit 4k video can invalidate alot of hdmi cables that normally works for 1080p.

This is why I keep wondering why people say that the Switch replaced the 3DS. The 3DS is not going anywhere anytime soon. It's still a big seller especially when there's so many of them already out there. It would stupid for them to kill support for it. Unless for some reason sales just die for it but that does not look likely at all. Switch and 3DS can and are living side by side just fine.

3DS had its best month (Dec 2017) since 2014.

I can fit my 3DS in a pocket, can't really do that with a Switch unless I break out some old-school JNCOs or something.

I gotta say the New 3DS XL is an impressive system after picking one up last month for a song at a pawn shop (I think they didn't know there was such a thing as a New 3DS XL since they were pricing it at what used original 3DS XL sell for). I swear every time I went into Gamestop last month I saw someone buying a Mario Kart 2DS, a New 2DS XL, or a New 3DS XL. I love the clamshell design so I don't have to worry about scratching the screen when putting it in my pocket. I'd be scared of scratching the Switch screen and then I'd need a huge case for it if I took it with me everywhere.

The 3DS does functionally make for a better portable console thanks to the size and clamshell design. It's also a better media player. Netflix, Hulu, a Web browser, Youtube. It's disappointing that the Switch has been on the market for almost a year now and it only has Hulu.

Do Nintendo's other hand-helds have HDMI out and wireless controller support. It seems like they keep releasing interesting games, but I'm not going to sit and look at a tiny screen and cramp my hands on a tiny device.

Chaotic, I am going to hazard a guess that you havnt really considered the 3ds because despite being old hardware reviewed to death, you didn't know it never had HDMI. None of Nintendo's portables have HDMI.

I haven't really looked into them lately, I just keep hearing people talk about the games and haven't checked to see if they finally offer some way to play them with external displays.

Much like all the other nintendo handhelds, no they don't support external displays. There are some complex hacks which require both hardware modifications and software for 3ds but it isn't quite at the level of "you can get it if you want it". ie, many youtube reviews are still stuck with cam footage. Emulation has actually progressed to advanced stages but requires amazingly high clocked processors.

Just bought my first Nintendo since the SNES, traded my barely touched PS4 on Amazon and got almost half back. The Switch is dope! I was playing some Mario Odyssey and Mario Kart, having a blast with my 6 year old niece who is laughing like a hysterical hyena. Everything from the software to the controls/hardware work very seamless, you play and enjoy more rather than focusing on the technical stuff. This is coming from a PC gamer too, I feel like its the perfect console to compliment the PC. Time to go back on the thread to see what I've been missing.

Got the last 2 collectible moons yesterday in Mario Odyssey. The "reward" for it is pretty lame and disappointing, I was hoping for more. I still have like 95 moons to buy in order to get them all, and I'll grind to get those, but after that I may be done with the game. I still have some more costumes available to purchase so I may grind to get even more coins just to say I 100% complete the game. But damn, such an incredible game and a masterpiece. I'm going to be sad when I no longer have an urge to go back to Mario Odyssey.

It can't be as disappointing as the crap reward for getting all the korok seeds in BOTW.

Every time I look at an Indie game in my Steam library, I wish I had it on my Switch. I hate buying games twice, though.

Most everything I have on Steam I bought during an incredible sale. My entire account of about 300 games I've only spent like $600. $2 per game at that rate. Most indie games I have were bought through bundles, too, so I've spent even less on those. Seriously like 10 cents a piece. So buying them again is no big deal to me, but the price on the Switch is certainly a lot more than I paid for the same game on Steam. That's my hesitance. I'm happy they do go on sale sometimes, but I'll be very selective with the games I buy again when they're still like 5-10 times what I paid. Maybe we'll get lucky and see Steam come to the Switch someday lol

Neat.

Clicked on the link, remembered why I hate Reddit...
