Don't know what the difference is, but when I got rid of my old 1080i RPTV and switched to my 1080P LCD, the HDMI cable I was using previously didn't work with it. Swapped in one of the others I had, and it worked fine.
1080p uses a bit more bandwidth. Early hdmi cables could only handle so much and as standards change so does the requirements.
