Mario Odyssey is one of the greatest games of all time in my opinion. It is a must have on Switch. It brought back the same feeling I had when I played Mario 64 when I was 14. It's nothing like Breath of the Wild I'm not sure how you are making that comparison lol.
If you like traditional Mario games too, check out New Super Mario Brothers U Deluxe. It's the Wii-U versions in one game. It's decent if you like those games. Same with Donkey Kong Country.
You mention Metroid, but I'm not sure if you also enjoy Metroidvania games too. Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom and Hollow Knight are fantastic. Hollow Knight can be had for $8 on the Mexican eshop. I got it 2 weeks ago and am like 4 hours into it and love it. Monster Boy took me like 16 hours total to finish 100%.
Dead Cells is fantastic too, and it's perfect to play on the Switch because you can just play one level and turn it off so easily.
Oh also, you WILL be playing your Switch in handheld mode a lot more than you think you will. I guaranteed it.
I never really liked Mario 64 so that's probably why this one doesn't really do much for me--and not that I have the experience to compare them (Odyssey and BotW), but I look at some gameplay and both have that openworld(ish) run around and collect stuff, get tools, whatever gameplay. I saw something about collecting moons in the mario game, like hundreds of them, and they're just sitting around...and it kinda nauseated me, lol. I had visions of myself deciding that I needed to collect all the moons for some reason, then hate my life. ....so in the scope of what I want to spend money on, that became an extremely hard sell for me, any time soon anyway, at that price--I only considered it because wallmart has it, and BotW for $45 right now.
I'll check out that other one, because that sounds more my style, and glad some of you have mentioned the Donkey Kong game. DKC was one of my favorite SNES games and so I was hoping to find something similar here--this freeze game, I wasn't sure what to make of it but I'll look into it more.
I definitely like the MetroidVania games and I already have several on steam. I do have Salt and Sanctuary, maybe put 15 hours into it and stopped for some reason, don't know why....but I've been avoiding Hollow Knight all that time because I didn't think I wanted another one like that at the same time. Figured why not just keep playing S&S? 8 dollars though, might have to check it out...or just wait for another steam sale.
Oh yeah, I foresee myself breaking all sorts of my own rules like bringing digital screen things into the bedroom.
