Played through 2nd dungeon on Link's Awakening today. Game is great. I'm a bit surprised by the performance though. There is a lot of frame drops in the game. Just kind of surprising for a game of this caliber to be released like that.

Yeah the performance is awful. I wish they would have just done a 30 fps lock if they couldn't lock to 720p60 docked. Great game though.

I have yet to play it in docked mode, only handheld mode in one sitting today. Is the performance the same in docked?

It's bad either way. For instance, when you go from indoors to outdoors you get a jarring drop from 60 fps to 30 fps before it recovers to 60 fps. And it'll regularly drop back down the same way in some parts of the map.

I'm really not liking Nintendo's decision to use dynamic resolution with double buffer vsync. I wish they would have just stuck to 720p60 or 1080p30 when docked instead of trying to do 1080p60, then having these jarring drops to 30 fps when the Switch can't handle it . It's really distracting IMO. Maybe I should wait for Nintendo to fix this before playing.

EDIT: Though I can't put the game down lol, probably won't wait for a patch.

I’ll admit to not playing it a lot and not paying attention to the details but weren’t you able to force 720p in the switch settings to get a more stable frame rate?

Is the performance the same either way for some titles?

God, how did I not play Link's Awakening back on my original Gameboy? This game is awesome. Not as good as A Link Between Worlds so far (which alone would justify buying a New 3DS XL), but still pretty impressive.

Yeah I played through the 3rd dungeon last night and the game is simply awesome. It's so much fun and makes me feel like a kid again going through a Zelda game on NES or SNES. I still can't get over the artwork and style to this game. It just has so much damn charm to it.

I think I had a flashback on the boss of the 3rd dungeon too. Something about that boss triggered something in me like being familiar, so I'm pretty confident I did in fact play this game way back when, however I just don't remember it because I was so young and it was so long ago.

Even though the framerate issues aren't game breaking or anything, I really wish they weren't there. It definitely pulls me out of just loving the style of this game when you get the 30fps instead of the buttery smooth 60fps. The good thing is that the issue hasn't happened in dungeons yet and I don't think it does. It's apparently just like a memory issue as well as a memory leak, so hopefully it's just patched shortly.

I guess I don't care if they fix it since this seems like a short game that I'll finish before anything comes out.

Yeah I don't really care either and it's not going to stop me from playing it, it would just be nice to have that smooth look and feel the whole game. I probably won't get back to it until this weekend.

Is this the DL version or the cart version? I am playing with the cart and have not noticed this.

Physical version on the cart, and it happens in both docked and portable mode. It also happens with the digital version of the game according to everything I've read.

You're not special, it is happening on yours too just like everyone else.

You must be blind if you haven't noticed it lol.

I'm excitedly waiting on the Dragon Quest reviews. I wanted to preorder it but I'm still concerned that there might be some really bad performance issues. I'd really prefer to play it on switch with it's extra features and portability but I don't want it to run like crap compared to PS4 or PC.

It pretty much happens every time you leave a building/dungeon and go back into the world. Apparently it's a memory issue where it's still caching stuff and causes the slowdown while doing that (or something like that) and once it's done caching, it will be 60fps. I've also noticed it just when there is a lot of foliage on screen too, which I read has more to do with a memory leak.

Any time the assets change it seems to slow down. My son started playing it at first and as an observer the slowdown is terrible to watch, it's over the top obvious, but somehow when playing it functions well enough not to bother me.

Just finished Link's Awakening. Such a fantastic game with such charm. I would rather a new top down Zelda game for Switch than a BOTW sequel.

For this being a 20 year old game that came out on Game Boy, man was it way ahead of it's time.

Finally bought the switch! Main version not lite - thanks to all who steered me in that direction, it is definitely portable enough

Loving that the system is very easy to use - the touchscreen makes it great for navigation vs ps4

First game...FF8 Remastered Its dowloading now

The switch is very convenient when traveling by train, as long as there is good range and the Internet, and this is different. I played The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening and Rocket League. I had hours of fun and the journey passed quickly.
When I play EFT, I value the community and what happens when I play a campaign with my friends. I love Skavs, I like found objects very much, but the greatest satisfaction is when I find different currencies. According to my nickname, EFT roubles are the most popular, that's why of all currencies Escape From Tarkov roubles are the coolest. After all, you can do many things with them, buy, sell, exchange for other currencies. I like to buy the most buy eft roubles

Are there 3rd party Joy Con replacements? I know there's 3rd party controllers but I'm mostly interested in if there are options for controls that can slot into the Joy Con retention on the system. I wouldn't even care about it losing the wireless/motion tracking, and some other joy con features. I'd want something that would have different layouts and/or ergonomics. So say better analog sticks, I'd personally want a symmetrical layout (heck even the placement of them now where they kinda scrunched them together to facilitate being able to use each joy con side as its own controller I think harms things). I'd also love more Xbox style triggers, with the "front" shoulder buttons moved to the underside of the controller).

Its actually 26 year old game. (Yes "well ackshually!") I remember playing it as a kid. I don't remember it all that well though. Honestly I have more vivid memories of playing some much worse Game Boy games for some reason. Honestly, I was a bit surprised to find out it came out in 93, as it almost seems like it was like late 80s, coming out before SMB3 let alone SMW or LttP. I don't think it was ahead of its time (LttP was almost 2 years old already, let that sink in, and Mario World was a year older than it), but I do think it highlights that for enjoyable gameplay you don't need that crazy of hardware. That really shouldn't surprise people that much. Frankly most modern games put the majority of gameplay stuff towards stuff that doesn't make them better, it just makes them more addictive and time wasting (by that I mean stuff like RPG like leveling up progression systems, tied with loot box type of stuff). And most of the hardware is going towards graphics (and much of it for things that really don't wow people now as its more the norm).

I think you can see this type of behavior in other content too. Think a relatively tightly, and coherently thought and planned out plot vs "oh this show did well so I guess we'll keep it on air" or movies being similar. Which that's not even new behavior but it is really egregious again.

And, even for the time LA was a standout game, so its not that its bad or anything, but I think it shows that we have almost entirely artificial limitations with regards to smartly designed gameplay.

I'm surprised we haven't seen more games try for a Zelda-esque top down graphics mode (kinda like GTA had where you could put it back into old top down mode even though it was still using the new engine/models). Which sure there'd be issues if you tried to mod say Skyrim or something for that, but a game designed with it in mind would be interesting. Which Nintendo could probably do something interesting with that, kinda like Link Between Worlds, but where you switch between a full on traditional Zelda layout and a modern 3D one, and they work that into the puzzles (where sometimes you'd need to be able to look around from a different angle, and then other times you'd need an overview, maybe with a co-op aspect added).
