I wouldn't count it out. I recently read an article about how the FCC is creating rules about allowing any device to be used as a cable box.

Yeah but that isn't going to help us that make custom built HTPCs though. That will help Apple sell more AppleTVs, or Amazon sell more FireTVs. Or maybe MS can sell more Xbones.

After the failure of Playready DRM and WMC you can almost be certain that whatever DRM scheme they work out that allows competition in the cable box space won't allow us to build our own cable boxes.

I hope I am wrong, but the last ten years in computerdom my pessimism has been more right than wrong. We are getting squeezed out.

Bah! Screw em! Charging retarded prices for their SW. If it was affordable it wouldnt have been torrented so much.

I've used the software in the past when I used to order dvd's from netflix and I didn't have time to watch. I always deleted the rips after watching so it was mainly a timeshifting mechanism that let me get the most out of netflix.

But that was before I had broadband. Ever since then I rely upon the kindness of strangers. Wink, wink.

?? I spent as much for TotalMedia Theatre 5 to watch BDs as I did for AnyDVD, and I can assure you that DVD is very much alive, whereas BD never got started in the first place. BluRay playback has always been a complete mess, and I regret paying good $ for that a LOT more than the $ I paid for AnyDVD.

HDD Regenerator costs around $100. Is that deserving of its 'retarded' price ?

Maybe. My bet is on some sort of DRM scheme instead of hardware like the CC. The one thing that win 10 has going for it is that its a mobile OS as well. So its more likely to be supported in some capacity. I kinda figure if this works out you'll get an app from your CC that displays all the feeds. TW apparently already does something like this with roku devices. I see it as the start of IP more than anything. IIRC AppleTV is already doing some light timeshifting with channels app and I know you can do video with network shares. It might not be as wild west as WMC could be with plugins and stuff, but I'm hoping for a TIVO like function on just about any device.

You gotta be fucking kidding. It was one of the best software deals around. Updates practically every day to rip even the latest BDs.

I had the lifetime subscription (with HD) from way back when it was much cheaper ... think I paid in the area of $50.

Its a sad day indeed.

Edit: Been a few weeks since I updated too ... hope I can find the last new version someplace!

It's amazing to me how out of touch the studios are in regards to this issue.
Remember how some of them tried DivX discs awhile ago that would chemically degrade after a short period of time?

I'm pretty sure they'd love it so you had to pay every single time you watched a movie, coupled with mandatory ads played before it starts, with their baseline volume set at least 10dB above the rest of the movie.

The consumer market certainly had a different idea of what "a la mode TV" should look like.

It's turning out more like a collection of restrictive Best Buy and Circuit City exclusives.

paid for itself with all those stolen films
People who pay for their media seem to appreciate it more. I make my mobile rips from my own discs and I don't have to worry about getting a letter from my ISP. Thanks, SlySoft.

I don't blame them. They just want easy.

And honestly Rokus are great devices for people who don't have a lot of local content but who want to be entertained.

I find that the Roku does a pretty good job with local content via Plex. Still, after seeing you guys extolling the virtues of Kodi I have been itching to give that a try as well. If I can upscale my DVD rips to look better on my big screen then I am all in.

Yeah, that was another fun day when TMT disappeared.

Another thing AnyDVD did was take care of Cinavia. That was quite impressive as well.

It does. Good enough for 99% of people I think.

If you are willing to throw hardware at it Kodi plus MadVR can do upscaling that will make an Oppo DVD player jealous:

You really need a decent GPU though. My 750 ti can't pull off upscaling 720p content to NNEDI3-64. NNEDI3-32 is the best it can do at 720p. It can upscale 480p DVD rips with NNEDI3-64 and they look great compared to the bilinear that most upscalers use.

Here is the rabbit hole:

Same here but Win10 has this ability by default. I also have a lifetime license, that I havent used in years, for GameJackyl.

A lot of HTPC products/software rely on VCD to mount .iso images.

Win10 pretty crappedcanned most HTPC stuff so it is hard to make an accurate assessment.

I have a super combo drive in my dead HTPC (BRD, HDDVD, DVD) and I think I used it twice? BRD/HDDVD were a PAIN to get working correctly in 7MC and constantly having to buy an upgrade to play newer discs, and bah. I play BRDs on my X1 now, and my HDDVD collection (about 80 discs) is in a box somewhere in the garage at my dad's house.

My HTPC died a month or so ago. I might steal it's SSD for something else.

I use MakeMKV and Handbrake for my ripping (of my own movies). Although, I'm strongly considering switching to Ripbot as it supports distributed encoding, which is huge if you have extra computers lying around.

As for AnyDVD, I did consider using it instead, but it was just so expensive in comparison. :\

I second that

Btw, they shut down dvdfab too, except it didn't actually go away. Then they have away passkey for free. Never used anydvd either because of the ridiculous cost, but just saying...
