DK is $80 physical. That's going to be the norm for their smaller games now, $70 digital/$80 physical. The big first party titles look to be $80 digital / $90 physical.
I have yet to see this confirmation for US prices - do you have any sources for this?

I've just seen the $79.99 MSRP for Mario Kart and $69.99 MSRP for DK on the Nintendo website. But I did also see all the tweets of other countries showing its $10 more for the physical ones.

Guess we'll have to see if it's just that one storefront price gouging. Betting it's Nintendo price gouging though.

The price feels high, but inflation has been high since the Switch released.

The NES was $200 in 1985, which is about $600 in today's dollars. The SNES was $200 in 1991, which is slightly more than the Switch 2 today at $460.

The Nintendo 64 is only $406 in today's dollars, but that's because Nintendo cut the price by $50 ahead of launch to be more competitive with Sony. Otherwise it would have been a bit over $500.

The GameCube actually comes in at $360 in today's dollars. That actually makes it their cheapest console.

The Wii is just under $400 in today's dollars. The WiiU would have been $416.

Meanwhile the Nintendo Switch which cost only $300 in 2017 would cost $390 in today's dollars. That's how bad inflation has been recently.

The average across all of them is $433. The Switch 2 isn't really that far off from what we could expect based on historical data.

The bigger issue for me is that there aren't any must have games. Metroid Prime 4 is available for the Switch as well and Duskbloods is far enough out that it doesn't have a release date yet, so it may be more than a year away.

Looks like the bump for physical vs digital prices is a Europe thing. Still Jesus Christ, $450 for the system when they're holding everything back but Mario Kart in fear of having to compete with GTA VI this year?

I found some fine print for this on twitter. That is the restricted version. Japanese only, must have a nintendo account region locked to Japan.
Yeah if they offered their Japan price to the rest of the world they'd just buy up the discounted Japan models. If my Japanese was better I'd be tempted to try to get one but Dragon Quest is about the most complex reading I can handle in Japanese right now (for example the Persona and Like a Dragon series are both super difficult for me to the point of not being enjoyable to play in Japanese for me).

I guess you could argue that the price hikes (including the games) are in line with inflation at least compared to Switch 1. But yeah it does seem too much.

The multilingual version is ¥69,980. Tax in Japan is 10%, but you can get tax refunded at most places with foreign passport. Nintendo store isn't one of those places, so you would need to try to get it from another place. not worth it unless the tariffs in the US causes the price to go up another 20+%.

I am going to be in Japan in June, so I already thought about this.

$400 would certainly be a lot easier on the wallet, but Nintendo has certainly invested more in building a better piece of kit. Some of the technology in the JoyCons is clearly a big step up from the original Switch.

I don't know what price Nintendo needs to charge to break even or how much the development costs for the hardware were, but they're not a company that will take a loss on the hardware to make it up on software sales as other companies were willing to do historically. I do not see them listening to the pleas of their fans. There's already a chance that availability will be low enough that plenty of these will actually be sold for $550 or more on eBay.

They did cut the price on the 3DS when it initially sold poorly. I think people are more upset about the game prices than the hardware.

Mario Kart actually looked pretty good on the treehouse today. The one thing I am not a fan of really is how the tracks all connect in Grand Prix mode. Like the first race is 3 laps, then the 2nd race is 2 "laps" on the connecting road to the 2nd track, and the 3rd lap in the race is just 1 lap around the 2nd course. This also happens on the 3rd and 4th race, but the 4th one on Mushroom cup had 8 "laps" total, so you had 6 on the course, but it wasn't a lap course it was a circuit course with a start and finish.

The game just looks flat out fun though.

I still don't plan on getting one at launch though because after Mario Kart, there is nothing really. That DK game looks worse on the Treehouse than it did on the trailer. It just seems very meh overall. I'm sure MP4 will be good but I mean, I can get that on my current OLED Switch if I want to, I don't need to shell out $500 for a new console for it.

And I also want to wait and see what the prices of the games actually are. If $80 is the new standard price for a digital game for first party flagship titles, then no shot in hell I will get one. I can 't imagine spending $160 + tax on TWO games, let alone digital versions.

Don't know why you're talking about the multilingual one, I was talking about the Japan only one. Japan is pretty shitty at speaking English so I wouldn't expect many there to care a whole lot about region unlocking if they can get the Japan only model way cheaper.

it is a battle royale of racing. not sure if it a great couch coop option as more and more people are sitting around doing nothing while the finalists get whittled down, but for online i could see it being a thrill with real stakes for the sweaty types.

No that is a different online mode you are talking about. I don't know if Battle Royale is even local or if it's online only.

I'm talking about the single player grand prix mode.

ah.

the royale seemed like a odd inclusion given the kart series is all about catchup mechanics so that no one is "truely" out of the race, whereas a royale is all about the elimination.

That was a highly disappointing Direct. Not a single new game announcement that I'm excited to play, in addition to skyrocketing price gouging.

3/10 at best.

0/10 for me seeing the FromSoft game is multiplayer. Nintendo is scared of trying to compete with GTA VI this year. If it was $350 with $70 games maybe I'd give it a 3/10 but between the price gouging and the lack of games there is nothing interesting about this for me now. I will say if you haven't played Tears of the Kingdom though that game is good enough to buy this system on launch and buy the 60 fps Switch 2 version too. But it's not a game with much replay value so since I already sunk 300 hours into it on the original Switch I'm never going to play the upgraded one as amazing a game as it is and as nice as it would be at 60 fps.
