Well, it's basically true.

Wrong.

Yes, it will go to being a good OS when they put back the good things they removed. I've gotten used to Windows 8, but it was and is inferior from a UI perspective. Metro for a desktop interface is truly, truly awful. Horizontal scrolling is terrible, and you can't escape it entirely in Win8. Also, the fact that Win8 tries to do it's best to force you into being tied to your online identity sucks.

I still use XP in a netbook (currently replaced my Thin client running XP) and I have XP in VMware.

My *nix box is a dual boot Ubuntu / XP pro machine.

Old Barton core Athlon XP packing 1 entire GB of memory and a blazing fast ATi (remember them?) Radeon 7000 (no, not *that* one...the older, better one).

I also have one Home Edition CD and one Professional Edition CD *with the boxes*.

:hmm:

Along with all the joy in life.

Yeah, being able to use more than 4GB of RAM and truly experience a next generation of computing was so unbearable

People trying to operate Vista on sub par hardware really missed out.

So how long yall reckon we can milk windows 7

Not too long, MS learned their lesson from XP, they simply won't let it happen again. That being said, I think the better question is, how long will we want to milk it?

As frustrating as Windows 8 can be in terms of non touch-oriented computing, its a surprisingly more powerful and hardware efficient OS than Windows 7. It won't take much more to get Windows 8 to be almost entirely agreeable (the metro start menu hybrid coming), and by Windows 9, I wouldn't be surprised if we have another Vista -> 7 scenario where everyone agrees on how fantastic 9 is even though it won't be that much different from what 8 turns out to be.

As an average consumer Win 8 is dead in the water to me until there are CHEAP decent size touch monitors. The fact that they haven't come out yet worries me.

As far as Microsoft learning it's lessons, that's fine-but we consumers can learn our lessons as well and not buy into MS's planned obsolescence marketing.

Just had my work laptop and desktop replaced since they were XP machines.
New hardware is nice although I really dislike the integrated mouse on the new laptop (T440s).

Only one XP machine still on my network. I originally used it as a workbench rig, and would KVM from it to a customer PC that was infested with malware.

I have since semi-retired it for a Win7 64 rig, but I occasionally use the XP box for HDD recovery since the specialized software on it was quite old and only ran on XP.

I have a soft spot for it in my heart, as a very young friend of mine helped me sand, paint and add a window to that case, and he was killed in a car accident 4 months later.

I personally switched from XP to Windows 7 a week ago Thursday.

That makes 3 computers so far this year I've upgraded to Windows 7. ()

I went from NT4 -> Windows 2000 -> Windows Vista -> Windows 7. Never used XP. I'm hoping that any future games I'm interested in come out with a Linux version, then I can ditch Windows forever.

Not really. My Windows 8 tablet only came with 2gb of ram and it runs fine.

Not a fair comparison, since Windows 8 was developed with lower power tablets in mind, its actually more efficient than Windows 7...ie if your system is older/slower and has less than 4GB of ram and is able to run Windows 7, you could benefit from upgrading to Windows 8 (only caveat would be potential driver issues, although chances are if it has a Win7 driver, it can be made to run on Win8).

The 2GB RAM would be too low to run 7 and applications comfortably.

32bit versions are leaner and might run well enough, and Windows 8 is even more efficient. 32 bit Windows 8 runs amazingly well on just 2GB, I'm actually typing this post up right now on an old Core 2 based Pentium with only 2GB, and its surprisingly fast... I'd say its actually an upgrade overall coming from the same hardware with a fresh install of XP+SP3 (dual boot to use this older hardware for some older games with hardware sound on XP)
