Google Chrome, New Browser

Google announced that they are launching the beta of their new open source web browser tomorrow, link with details and screenshots here: http://googleblog.blogspot.com...h-take-on-browser.html. So is it going to bomb or be amazing or what?

Interesting. I'll probably check it out, but I'm pretty happy w/Firefox, unless it's really amazing, I probably won't bother switching.

Wonder how snappy it will be. Would be interesting to see it give Opera a run for its money in the speed department.

I wonder how much browsing data it collects by default? I mean, up to now, Google makes its money off of putting its data to good use, but it's limited to its own search and related sites (which is quite a network, really). They've attempted it before with Google Toolbar, but I'm wondering if the browser is basically going to be an enhanced Firefox w/ more tracking.

I've done data mining, worked on the models and such, and from that perspective it's absolutely awesome to have such comprehensive, complete data to work with. However, from the privacy aspect, where I currently work/train (I'm a law student), it's quite scary.

Maybe I need to fire up SAS, figure out what all of you plan to buy for the next 3 years, then burn the printouts

Their comic indicates that when you browse away from one domain to another they intend to kill off the process associated with the "old" domain and create a new one, dumping all of the rendering information in the process. Done wrong, this means that every time you follow an off-domain link and then hit "back" you'll have to swallow a performance penalty. Although even Opera has moved to re-rendering most of a page when you click back, so it may not be that terrible.

They claim to have built a very fast Javascript engine, so that could be worth quite a bit. And a lot of the other ideas put forward in their comic are very interesting.

We'll see, I guess.

love firefox, but firefox 3 has too many problems with security. 50% of the work pages i go i have to Add Exceptions for because the certificates are invalid or whatever.

I wonder the same. It's bad enough I have gmail, I don't need Google indexing everything I do on the web.

That's not a security problem. It's preventing a security risk. Unless you can verify who signed their certificates you can not be 100% sure who you are communication with.

it seems overtly sensitive... and despite my adding domains to the exceptions list (with wildcards), it keeps flagging the same corporate sites over and over again. no problems with FF2

what FF extensions do you regularly use? The only one I ever found really useful is the quick search on different sites.

piclens is pretty sweet! Thanks for the tip.

I refuse to use IE and have been using FF for what seems like forever. Google usually does a good job at actually having original ideas. I am up for a change.
