When do you guys think this will get out of beta and other companies will be allowed to publish their apps? I would love to be able to stream movies from my gallery on my phone to the chromecast. I saw an article a week ago with someone who has already managed to make this work.

some MKV files play fine in my chrome browser on desktop.

while other MKV plays without audio. does this mean it will have no audio on chromecast to TV??? can someone confirm before i make the purchase?

this usb dongle is awesome if it can play everything my PC plays!

Yes, if the MKV plays without audio on your Chrome browser, then it won't have audio when you cast it to the TV through ChromeCast.

Hmm, I can't actually get any file to play in Chrome on my computer. When I drag a video file in (MP4) it starts to "download" it for some reason. Tried dragging it in and also specifying the path.

doing the same thing to me. I gave up on it. That is why I want those apps to be released ASAP so I don't have to deal with chrome anymore.

I still haven't received my 3-month Netflix code. I did receive an email from Amazon saying that I'd soon receive the code, but that hasn't happened yet. How the hell do I contact CS at Amazon? I'm looking all over and I can't find it anywhere.

EDIT: I guess they could sense my annoyance, I just received the email.

I finally had time to open and setup the Chromecast. I have to admit the device current functionality is pretty disappointing. Sure I can watch Youtube and Netflix but I can already do that with my JB Apple TV2 and Revue GoogleTV. The only cool thing is Chrome tab casting but that's pretty choppy. This thing needs app support or XBMC port. Good thing it was only $35.

Patiently waiting for Plex support...

When that happens, bye bye HTPC.

BTW, I had not heard of Plex until recently. I highly recommend it. So easy to set up.

So... I placed two orders. One from Amazon the day after it was released, it was out of stock at the time. Then I purchased one from Best Buy last week (it was still out of stock though) when it was back for sale with the 3 months of Netflix.

Logically, I should get Amazon's first and then Best Buy's. Well, Amazon pushed their date from they didn't know, to I should be receiving it next week, to they didn't know again, to October ~20th. Best Buy's will be here on Monday. What the hell Amazon?!

The big thing about it - aside from the low price - is that you don't need to worry about an Apple TV remote. You just use your mobile device/laptop as you already do, and then just press cast and you're good to go. And any device that has Youtube or Netflix can act as a remote. To me this is how an HTPC should function.

BTW - Roku is a great Plex Client if you looking to drop your HTPC now.. Although the PLEX app for android is pretty awesome - Better than the iOS version.

I ordered from Amazon the day after it released and got the same status updates. Back ordered all the way to October/November when I ordered less than 24 hours after it was announced? Wtf Amazon.

Best purchase ever for $11.

I think I ordered little later than you from Amazon but I got mine on Monday. Do you have Amazon Prime? If not, maybe that's why I got mine ahead of you.

Both Apple TV and GoogleTV can do what you're talking about via AirPlay and cast on GoogleTV. The only advantage I see with Chromecast is that you can use iOS, Android, or Windows device to do it while you're limited to iOS devices on AppleTV and Android devices on GoogleTV. But until Chromecast can play local files flawlessly like JB AppleTV, it can't really compete other than price.

Has anybody got the Chromecast working with 5.1 surround through their receiver yet? I have it plugged directly into my receiver and tried a movie from Google Play last night, the movie says it has 5.1 surround but it only came through as stereo. That's pretty much an instant deal breaker.

worked fine for me without any additional tweaking or setup. do you have hdmiCEC turned on? if so check in your tv/receiver cec settings. i've heard of hdmi-cec forcing the sender device to only send in stereo if the hdmi-cec settings are set a certain way in the tv or the receiver.

quick test would be to turn cec off and see if you get surround.

The point is you don't need to launch a dedicated app to control it, you just use your mobile device as you normally do, and you can just press the cast button and have it play on the TV. And any device on your network that has the same app can act as a remote.

Other apps are in the making. HBO and the other streaming apps have said they are working on it. Plex is also adding cast support.

Can the Jailbroken AppleTV even do 1080P?
