FYI, watch the vid in the link I just posted. If you want to put CM on your Android device, ANY AUDIO OR VIDEO CAN NOW BE CASTED FROM YOUR PHONE FROM ANY APP. I'M YELLING BECAUSE I'M SO EXCITED.

Extremely excited for this, but it's not actually released yet.

I'm hopeful more of these features make it to iOS as well. Particularly, since I use a passcode on my phone I miss out on having play/pause controls on the lock screen. Thinking about it makes me want to play with XBMC again through my HTPC. I remember being able to send all kinds of stuff to XBMC which would then play it on my TV, but it fell out of favor when the server side of it suffered from one quirk after another; the worst being randomly minimizing the player to desktop.

worked fine for me without any additional tweaking or setup. do you have hdmiCEC turned on? if so check in your tv/receiver cec settings. i've heard of hdmi-cec forcing the sender device to only send in stereo if the hdmi-cec settings are set a certain way in the tv or the receiver.

quick test would be to turn cec off and see if you get surround.

Thanks for the suggestion...I tried turning off CEC and it's still playing as stereo. Receiver is set to "straight", i.e. no tweaks or special decoding. However, I'm using the old Ice Age movie that I think came free when I bought the Nexus 10. Maybe it's particular to this title. What films have you tried it with?

Well, let me ask a basic question before I buy one. If I am understanding right, what Chromecast does is to make a TV (or anything else..?) a phone or a tablet's wireless monitor. Correct? Android phone/tablet, of course.

Can you do something else on the hosting phone/tablet while a video is playing? Or is it tied to the TV during the playback?

I just got my chromecast from a local best buy, still offers netflix deal here! So surprised, I knew everyone has been trying to find these and I just walked in and ask for the fun of it. Anyone in the socal area, I picked mines up from the best buy at west convina, and i saw they have a box filled with them as of 4pm in the pickup section.

anyways, is it possible to stream from chrome browser in android phone? for example, i use chrome in my galaxy nexus, visit site twitch.tv and them push to chromecast. Or do I need to do this from a desktop chrome?

It's not really a wireless monitor. The Chromecast is a little ChromeOS (or Android) machine. And the Chromecast streams content directly from the web, not from your Android phone or tablet. So if you open the YouTube app on your phone and hit the cast button, all the phone is doing is sending the link of that YouTube video to the Chromecast and the Chromecast streams it from the web. Your phone can be used to pause, play or control volume, but it's not really streaming the video so you can use the phone for other things or even shove it in a blender and the Chromecast will continue playing.

Ugh, that just reminds me. Amazon said they were going to send me a Netflix code after a week and they never did. Anyone else ever get their Netflix code from Amazon?

I don't see a Cast button in the Chrome browser on Android, so I'm guessing no.

Oh, I just searched my mailbox and found my Netflix code from Amazon. They were tricky and snuck it in there. They sent me an email on July 30th saying I'd get the code in 5 days. And then literally 5 minutes later sent a similarly titled email with the code. I thought it was a duplicate email just telling me it was coming in 5 days.

Damn I should go buy a bunch, still selling for $60+ on ebay auctions.

I got mine from bestbuy.com order. Haven't opened it. Think I will sell it.

Not really seeing the use of it? I have pc's/laptops connected to all 3 of my tv's, with windows media center for netflix and cable tv with hd homerun triple tuner cablecard. Then a 12tb NAS for streaming local movies.

Your advanced setup is hardly common. The Chromecast is for people who don't want or don't have HTPCs, as well as don't want or don't have NAS at home.

The point is you don't need to launch a dedicated app to control it, you just use your mobile device as you normally do, and you can just press the cast button and have it play on the TV. And any device on your network that has the same app can act as a remote.

Other apps are in the making. HBO and the other streaming apps have said they are working on it. Plex is also adding cast support.

Can the Jailbroken AppleTV even do 1080P?

That's how Airplay and cast on GoogleTV pretty much work. You press send to TV icon button on your iOS or Android device and it will play on your TV. If I'm watching YouTube video, I just hit send to TV button on my phone or tablet and it plays on my TV via GoogleTV.

JB AppleTV can play 1080p but will downgrade the output to 720p. That's absolutely fine with me as it's good enough. XBMC on AppleTV can play every MKV video on my network server flawlessly while XBMC on Android still doesn't have official video hardware acceleration support and will choke on even most basic 720p videos. Forget about playing 1080p on XBMC Android even on the most powerful hardware. I really want to replace my three JB AppleTV2 with something newer but sadly there's nothing in the market that's comparable and better than this ancient device. Maybe Chromecast will be that device in the future but right now it can't even play 720p web videos via chrome smoothly. It has long ways to go before it can even compete with JB AppleTV.

It says that it can work on any chrome platform. Will this work on android Chrome? All I want it to be able to load my sd card with movies and stream them to the cast. Can't wait for all these apps to finally start being released.

Don't think that one will, looks like it will be a Chrome Store app/extension. But we've already seen other posts showing the ability to cast straight from your phone's gallery and stuff. Once Google opens it up, the apps will be there.

you really dont need a HTPC or a NAS. all you need is a computer running a DLNA server and a DLNA compatable TV or AVR and an ap on your phone. its how i get most of my stuff to the TV, only thing it wont do is youtube which i dont care about playing on my TV anyway

its why i said earlier that its a cool device but i simply have zero use for it

In this day and age more and more people are buying new phones and tablets rather than new laptops. I recently sold my gaming laptop and for now my main "computer" is my Nexus 7, and aside from the loss of playing my Steam library, it does everything else a-okay. I like the Chromecast because it's not dependent on a standalone laptop/desktop. As soon as we get the new apps with Chromcast function built in my mobile devices can easily substitute as my HTPCs with no wires needed.

I like having my NAS because it backups all computers and streams video to any device. My setup is uncommon though.

I would like 1 device that can do what wdtv live + roku can do. Chromecast is definitely interesting and I'm on the fence if I should get one.

What make/model receiver? I've learned that Netflix (and Google Movies) through Chromecast, like Roku, does 5.1 as Dolby Digital Plus. Your receiver will need to support that format.
