from a quick look at the sdk, content is passed to the chromecast via a simple URL. i'm cautiously optimistic that local content will work via this SDK, depending on the decoding capabilities of the chromecast itself.
the sample code, for example, simply passes this URL to chromecast to play "big buck bunny"
http://clips.vorwaerts-gmbh.de/VfE_html5.mp4
if smb shares are supported by chromecast, then i see no reason why it shouldn't work.

Forgive my possible ignorance, but couldn't you just run a web server on your smb box and give the URL of your local vid stash?
ie - pass http://192.168.1.10/public_html/vids/movie.mp4 to chromecast
So is the chromecast pulling content directly down from netflix/youtube or is it streaming to my device and then to the chromecast?
Pretty cool device for older HDTVs most of the new ones come with this built in already. Does this do tablet/phone mirroring?
pulling directly from the source, not passing through the device.

I have no use for it though, my Roku and Plex Server do all of this just fine.
Right, but if Plex can implement a way to send the URL of the desired file (whether it be the native file or a transcoded cache file) in their Android app, that would be awesome.
? I can pull up my shows on the android device and click play -> Play on Roku.
available on amazon. purchased!
