You know what would be awesome, for someone to make an app that allows this device to work with SiliconDust's HDHomerun. Unlike the DLNA that comes with televisions, maybe you could get access to your WMC recordings or something.

question.

can you plug this into a AVR and have it do all of this stuff or does it need to go into a TV?

There's no reason why it shouldn't work as long as you have a power source (if your AVR has HDMI 1.4, i think you don't even need usb).

I got the shipping notification for mine from the GP store today. Suspect I'll get it Tuesday.

I can confirm that I've plugged mine into an Onkyo TX-NR609 and it works perfectly. I ended up doing the setup from my phone instead of my desktop(was saying my wifi was turned off?) and it only took a few minutes.

The one thing I haven't got to work yet was having it automatically switch to the correct input when queuing up the chromecast to play something. I'm almost positive they stated it could do this during the presentation. This could be because it's plugged into the receiver and I haven't tested plugging straight into the TV yet.

That feature is weird. On my Panny Plasma it does not work at all with selecting the proper input and turning the TV on. On the Sony LCD it works perfectly. It must have something to do with being plugged in to the USB. The panny plasma does not have one and is plugged in to an outlet.

Can't remember the name of it now, but there is a standard/function that allows your TV to switch to the right input.

HDMI-CEC. Each manufacturer has their own cute little name for it though (I think Sony is HDMI Control).

yup, it needs hdmi-cec to be enabled in both the receiver and the TV for input/power switching to work. there were a few sub-settings on both my toshiba tv and denon receiver, i enabled them all. with everything off, if I cast something to it, it will turn on both tv and receiver, set inputs on both, and start playing. pretty awesome. doesn't have anything to do with being plugged in to usb or not.

the only downside is it messes with my harmony remote's device state.

Will the Chromecast only play content from a particular Google account or can others cast their content to the device? Thinking of the scenario where a friend wants to play a movie they have purchased on the Play store. If this is the case then that is a massive selling point imo.

That's the thing, you still need some way to control say, volume. So this auto switching stuff sounds pointless and possibly an actual interference if you have a Harmony.

Man, av controlling protocols are such a mess.

Yes, that sounds like a nightmare. I always turn those features off my equipment for that reason. Don't want my wife calling me mid work day because she can't watch TV.

the chromecast has it's built in volume control, so if your receiver was set to a normal volume before, it works fine using the volume buttons on your phone (from within youtube/google music app/netflix) if you max out the chromecast and need to go louder, you'll need to use your receiver remote.

i will test this tonight, but I think as long as you're on the same network as the chromecast, the updated apps will see it.

So far as I can tell, should work fine for anyone connected to the same WiFi network. I was able to connect, stream and sync just fine between devices I own and my wife owns.

Same thing on my account.

It should still show your bill date and your credit will be used at time it is due

Thanks for the confirmations, guys. I was confused because from my previous experience with monthly subscription (e.g. WoW), the future billing date gets pushed back according to the subscription code that was entered. This way we could tell that the code took. The way Netflix does it there's no way I can tell whether the code was applied correctly (except for maybe messaging/calling support).

how much bandwidth it uses for streaming the chrome tab at 720P (let's say a full screen video)?

Your mobile device doesn't stream, it just sends urls for the Chromecast to retrieve from the web.

he's talking about streaming from chrome on the desktop

i think brian broke it down. i remember high bitrate 720p was 5mbps and normal 720p was 3mbps. forget what the 480p option was.

It is not clear to me how this differs from Android sticks. Can anyone explain it to me?
