Google Earth for Free!

Google Earth is similar to NASA's free WorldWind software.

Before Google Earth used to be fee-based, but now they're releasing a free version for us all, as well as "plus" versions which cost $$.

I highly recommend this over NASA's software because Google Earth incorporates the same (if not better) 3d views, but also includes google's map directions, local search, and more.

It's pretty neat IMO.

It is still a lot better than most of the similar programs I've seen. I can actually make out my apartment for once. If you could get the image quality to where you could see individual people, I think there could be some serious invasion of privacy issues - people sunbathing nude in their fenced in back yard don't want to accidentally wind up all over the internet.

is this like a free version of keyhole or something? same image database? I figure its like a limited version of Keyhole with only US cities just like in maps.google. i like the addition of satellite view on maps.google and when i view that at 1600x1200 resolution its so much better than back when MapQuest had satellite view for a while.

This feels much slower than keyhole (maybe since its free) and also i notice it just downloads one big chunk of a high resolution image and you zoom in and out a la flash/photoshop not a bad idea since its it cuts down on downloading i guess. Although maps.google seems to be faster when you want to get somewhere really quick. either way its cool for free software.

Something else I just noticed that seems pretty spiffy: if you have the Plus version you can utilize GPS capabilities as far as tracking you across a route if you have a GPS device. (Tools->GPS)

Yeah I dl'ed this today.... found my house lol. Its pretty cool! I dont think its in real time though cause one of the sidewalks is missing from the pic.
