Before Google Earth used to be fee-based, but now they're releasing a free version for us all, as well as "plus" versions which cost $$.
I highly recommend this over NASA's software because Google Earth incorporates the same (if not better) 3d views, but also includes google's map directions, local search, and more.
It's pretty neat IMO.

I think I actually like World Wind better...
A lot of the Google stuff is fantastic, but am I doing something wrong, or are the high resolution maps only available for certain areas? At least with World Wind, I can get the USGS maps of the whole US (They're less detail than the high res maps, but at least they cover just about every square inch of the US) I can't even see my old college with Google Earth.

It is still a lot better than most of the similar programs I've seen. I can actually make out my apartment for once. If you could get the image quality to where you could see individual people, I think there could be some serious invasion of privacy issues - people sunbathing nude in their fenced in back yard don't want to accidentally wind up all over the internet.

Data isn't realtime anyway (images from up to three years ago) so I doubt this would ever become a legitimate issue.

World Wind must include a lot of data or be real sloppy 'cause I have poked around Google Earth quite a bit and the used cache is still less than 100.

Be sure to crank up the viddy settings and disk/mem cache.

So, where are some interesting places to check out? Oddly, Nazca Peru is not available via search: 14°42'41.34"S 75° 7'18.20"W. The resolution is not high enough to see the critters, but the lines can be seen.

RBC, I'm having the same issue... apparently the Hi-Res stuff is only for urban cities with the Google software. I can see my house flawlessly, but when I go out to the boonies to look at my old college, I can't even make out the roads.
